Would have been 30 weeks when I last saw my midwife when I next see her

Hi all
I saw my midwife at 6 weeks for my booking appointment, had my scan at 13 weeks and next one booked for 20 weeks. At my scan the midwife at the hospital said to me she spoke to my midwife and she's happy to see me at 36 weeks next. I no they are busy and cuts have been made but surely I should be being checked more often than this?what if something was wrong that I can't pick up on

Are you on consultant care or on a second baby or in Scotland? All these things seem to have a bearing. You should see someone at 28 weeks for bloods, bp, urine and a bump measure, then every 3/4 weeks after and then dropping to shorter intervals in later pregnancy.

That sounds crazy! My blue folder has a timetable of appointments printed on the inside back cover, and it's similar to the schedule sundae describes. Definitely wouldn't be happy with what you've described!

Trazzletoes · 28/01/2013 07:38

Yes you should be checked more than that!

Having said that, a friend whose baby was due at the same time as mine. (Both 2nd babies) but lives in the next NHS area had about half my midwife appointments.

Did your midwife not tell you when your next appointment was when you left the 6 weeks one?

I would call her/your GP and make an appointment at 28 weeks at the very least.

That's ridiculous, unless appts are being done at the hospital or by your gp instead? How could they pick up Pre eclampsia or gd? I've linked here to the nhs antenatal appointments scheduler. You may miss 25,31 and 40 week appts if this isn't your first baby but otherwise you should have all of them.

I'd phone and just ask to have appts in line with nhs guidance.

Emsyboo · 28/01/2013 07:51

That is ridiculous unless you are getting regular checks by someone they cant check baby/ fundal bump is growing they could miss all sorts of important symptoms or Antenatal depression. Symptoms that may cause you to go into labour a bit early if not managed. I assume you got your scans at the right time and like others have said they do your bloods and give you more info at 28 weeks.
You really need to speak to a midwife or consultant I am 2nd baby but high risk and seeing both consultant and midwife regularly x x

Moominsarescary · 28/01/2013 08:06

My friend is 20 weeks, she next sees hers at 28 weeks for bloods and injections then not until 36-37 weeks.

I'm not sure how normal this is as I'm consultant led and have to see someone every 2 weeks.

AladdinOnRepeat · 28/01/2013 08:11

I've seen my midwife at:

11 weeks - booking in
12 weeks - hospital scan
16 weeks - midwife
20 weeks - scan
24/28/32/36 weeks midwife
38 weeks midwife
Need an appointment this week for my 40 weeks check up.

Not my first baby.

Kbnbump · 28/01/2013 08:16

This is exactly what I'm worried about if something is not picked up. I'm in England and this Is my 2nd baby so I knew would see them less than before. I got lectured about being over weight and all the complications it could causes but I'm sure that would want them to check me at least a few times throughout. My midwife did write in my notes she would see me at 16 weeks but then told the midwife at my scan she's happy to see me at 36 weeks. Ill defo be ringing her up and sorting it out now know its not right. Thanks all

If your bmi is around the 30 mark you should also be offered a gtt at 28 weeks, have they spoken to you about the whooping cough vaccine ?

Oodsigma · 28/01/2013 08:55

If you are seeing a consultant they are usually instead of MW. Some areas do GP checks again instead of MW.

You say you saw a MW at the scan did she do checks as well?

backwardpossom · 28/01/2013 09:20

You should be getting bloods at 28 weeks for sure, 2nd baby or not. I'm in Scotland and this is my 2nd baby and I've not had many appointments this time around, but I think yours are far too spaced out. Good luck OP!

Kbnbump · 28/01/2013 09:32

I'm not regularly seeing a consultant I do have appointment at 36 weeks with one to discuss whether I will be having another csection. The midwife at my 12 week scan did do my bloods no1 has meantioned whooping cough vaccine I did have the flu jab when 1st visited the doctor to tell him I was pregnant

So if you don't chase it up you'll have had
A booking appt
12 week scan
20 week scan
36 week appt.

I think they've mixed up cons/MW appt when they said 36 weeks. Just phone and book MW appt and then get them to list your appts

Paradisefound · 28/01/2013 10:07

In my area they give you a schedule of Appts with mw, but these are the minimum expected. I can make an appt any Tuesday as she is at my drs surgery all day Tuesday. I am expecting my first baby and saw my midwife at 8 weeks, 14 weeks, 21 weeks, 25 weeks, 28 weeks and she requested that I go back next at 30 weeks or sooner if I have any problems. Can you not request an appt? To go 20-36 weeks without seeing a midwife seems very wrong... I would make a fuss and get the care you are entitled to! Good luck.
