Does anyone still use this? I thought not?

I got some from friends as gifts and it got me wondering. I was sure this is something people haven't used for years? But they still sell it?

This is my first if that is not obvious Grin

Hi ladymia
My sisters just had a baby and she uses baby powder and a few other mums I know still use it. Think it really depends on if u want to use it.Grin

I won't be using it - I avoid it anyway as asthmatic and not great for me to be breathing in the fine dust it creates. Not convinced it's best for babies to be around it either!

Bagofmashings · 27/01/2013 23:53

No, I wouldn't and didn't use it. It's bad for skin, can cause breathing difficulties and has even been linked to some cancers (although not in babies, think was in elderly people).

ladymia · 27/01/2013 23:57

No I was not planning on using this either but it did make me wonder, people must still use it and i thought it was a BIG no-no!

Just made me randomly wonder

DD is 1.1 and I still have the talc unopened from a gift when she was born. dont think its safe for babies, and at tue age she is now, I dont know what its purpose is.

I tell.you one thing it is perfect for is at the beach - chuck a load on your feet at the end to help.brush the sand off thats stuck to them. Works like a charm.

Also very useful for getting greasy marks off clothes -- put a little mound on the grease spot, leave overnight, shake off powder the next day and put the item in the wash as normal. Definitely wouldn't use it on a human body though, for health reasons Bagofmashings lists.

Preposteroushypothesis · 28/01/2013 12:18

Uhhhh I'm feeling very out of the loop here and also a terrible mother! Did not know talc was supposed to be bad, Shock have used it on my daughter since she was very young...she's 2 now though so I'm guessing it hasn't done her any harm! Why is it supposed o be a big no no?

AbsintheMinded · 28/01/2013 12:22

I've used it too. Under her arm used to get a bit inflamed and a bit of talc helped. Between the leg joints for when there was a little nappy rash. What is the other options then?

Can you tell I don't have any mummy friends to compare with?

IJustWoreMyTrenchcoat · 28/01/2013 19:45

My mum has already bought me some, although she knows it's not really used anymore. Will be buying one of the following instead in case she can't resist, they are both talc free:

www.burtsbees.co.uk/natural-products/baby-and-mama-baby-bee/baby-bee-dusting-powder.html

www.nealsyardremedies.com/baby-powder

When we were young we always used talc after the bath, the Johnson's does smell lovely, but will not be encouraging it!

morethanpotatoprints · 28/01/2013 20:20

I used it with all 3 of mine but not all the time.

It was especially good in cases of nappy rash. Cover bum in cream but you can't rub it in coz it hurts baby. So put talc directly in nappy and it acts like a barrier between bum and nappy to stop cream rubbing off straight away.
Never shake the bottle to allow a cloud and you should be ok.

babysaurus · 28/01/2013 20:24

I don't use it, although was also bought some when DS was born, but am not sure exactly why it's so bad other than if the baby is a bit wheezy. Can someone explain to me why it's fallen out of favour?

Dh2812 · 28/01/2013 20:34

I don't think i'll be using it. There have been claims of a link between talc and cancer which I don't think have been proven yet. A well balanced article from cancer research uk on this

Lavenderhoney · 28/01/2013 20:38

I never used it, all that dust and extra hoovering:)

However, if you go to the beach, take talc. Its brilliant for getting sand off feet before you get in the car. Do it outside the car:)
