Hope someone can help. Are any of you able to recommend the best drug to take to keep HG at bay? Week 6 and already feel sick. Had a month of work last time and really don't want to repeat that this pregnancy. Also have a toddler. Doctor has prescribed Promethazine by said to only take it if I'm at risk of dehydration so haven't started it yet. But have spent the weekend in bed due to nausea.

Cyclizine helped me a lot. Didn't totally take it away but made it a lot more manageable. Made me v drowsy tho!

Second vote for cyclizine. I was prescribed it after being admitted to hospital in my last pregnancy. It really helped my vomitting, even though still felt nauseous, and made me very tired. Been prescribed it for this time round and I will not hesitate to take it once my sickness kicks in!

I had Stemetil and then Cyclizine. The best thing ever were the Stemetil injections in hospital when I was dehydrated.
Cyclizine good but made me exhausted.

third vote for cyclizine. also prescribed after being admitted with HG.

Cyclizine tablets didn't help, although it did as IV jabs in hospital.

Stemitil tablets helped first pg, but not second.

Ondansetron/Zoostran helped in second pg but not first.

Avomine just came straight back up.

Friend was helped by Phenergan in both her pgs.

Ondasetron was the only one that worked for me .

Tried cyclizine first and it did stop the sickness but left me so exhausted that I couldn't function anyway .

Stemetil was great for a few days then seemed to stop being effective .

I felt like a different person after my first dose of ondasetron - it was amazing stuff .

So my advice is - if one medication doesn't work for get them to give you something else and just keep trying until you find the one that suits you . Fingers crossed that it's the cyclizine you already have !

Littlemissexpecting · 27/01/2013 21:11

I was also given cyclizine and as others left me exhausted but I found half a tablet instead of full tablet helped nausea and sickness when taken regularly

Cherryjellow · 27/01/2013 21:18

I agree with keep trying till you find the right one, what works for one doesn't always work for another. cyclizine didnt work for me, It did nothing, others made me very drowsy. Hope you feel better soon op :)

Come and chat on the HG support thread. You may not be able to pick and choose what you are prescribed as different NHS trusts allow different meds to be prescribed (partly due to pregnancy and partly due to cost). You can also take a cocktail of drugs if needed. Some areas will only do this or prescribe certain meds if you have been prescribed them in hospital. You may also find that some work for a while or for a particular pregnancy and then don't work for you. You really need to try something and then work from there. It's not much fun but if you have a good GP, you'll get there.

BTW, I think that phenergan, avomine and promethazine are all the same drug. It can be deceptively sedating so watch out if you want to drive.

Oh, one last thought. I've been told that it is better to take drugs for HG before it actually starts (if you've had HG in a previous pregnancy) as it's supposed to be more effective. I've never tried that but I hear that doctors who are clued up on HG will recommend this. I know that's not what your GP has suggested but maybe you could look into it? It's a lot harder to get HG under control when you are at risk of dehydration. You need to weigh up the risks and benefits yourself.
