Disrupted sleep - toilet trips and extreme hunger in the night

I'm 8-10 weeks pregnant and struggling to get a decent sleep as I'm already getting up 4 times per night to go to the toilet! Not only that but I'm waking up at 4/5/6am starving hungry. If I don't eat I wake up in the morning light-headed, faint and unable to function for an hour!!

Anyone else had this so early?! Should I give in and eat in the night? Should I not drink before bed so I don't get up so regularly? Or do I, as my sister said, "get used to it, it's only going to get worse!"?

I had this all the way through my 1st pregnancy and luckily just the for a few weeks in my current one. I ended up having a bowl of grapes whatever I could get my hands on on my bedside cabinet each night which helped tide me over and quench a little of my thirst.

As for the constant peeing that should calm down a bit in the 2nd trimester when baby moves up a bit. Although it might return in the 3rd when baby is bigger.

I was peeing constantly early on and it turned out to be a UTI so maybe check with the doctor because it did calm down after I got treated for that. Didn't have any symptoms other than peeing a lot but they are so common in pregnancy it may well be that.

Grapes by the bed is a brilliant idea, might try that. Don't know why people insist on saying get used to it, it will get worse etc... how helpful, now I feel inadequate for complaining...

I was the same in the first trimester but now, in the second, I don't need to wee half as much. Sometimes I go the whole night without going. Not good to limit fluid intake I don't think. COuld you have a healthy snack next to bed? Fruit or crackers? x

welcome to pregnancy, I am 38 weeks and get up many many times during the night for the toilet, i am also extreemly thirsty so drink tons once in bed, its a double edged sword, the joys

mylittlemonkey · 27/01/2013 17:42

I also had this in first trimester and now again in third trimester. I don't think there is a solution to the needing to go for a wee as if I would try not drinking before bed I would feel dehydrated and then worry I had not drank enough or get up in the night desperately needing a drink. If you are waking due to hunger then I would keep something by your bed to eat as your body is telling you that's what it needs and also in first trimester I would feel even more sick if I did not eat regularly. How about some soreen slices. I also started reading a book which kept by bed so if I found difficult to get back to sleep reading would usually help and stop and work/ other worries popping into my head and keeping me awake.

I'm 34 weeks and up literally every 45 minutes for the worlds smallest wee, I did try not drinking too much in the evening but like others said it just made me dehydrated and caused my lips to crack through the night and wake me up because my mouth was so dry.
I avoid tea completely in the evenings though and drink Pepsi max and it doesn't make me pee quite as much.

Msbluesky32 · 27/01/2013 17:53

I was the same with the waking up hungry, always at 3 or 4am. I had a bowl of cereal or a yoghurt and some granola about an hour before bed and that seemed to Help. I also kept flavoured oatcakes next to bed.
I'm with twitchytail on the loo trips, I'm only going once a night now and I'm 30 weeks. In fact last night I didn't need to get up at all.

phoenixrose314 · 27/01/2013 19:52

All medical advice says that not drinking will only lead to you being dehydrated and will not actually affect how much you need to wee. You'll also end up actually retaining water and bloating massively because your body will think it needs to store it. Please be careful.

Think about what and how much you eat before bed - try loading a small carbohydrate filled snack into your system, perhaps toast or fruit - and then also have something on your bedside table to grab when you get hungry in the night.

It's all normal though. Have no fear :)

Fairylea · 27/01/2013 19:56

I was like this with both of mine. Be careful you drink enough as you don't want to get a uti... if it burns when you pee or you feel it's very urgent you may need anti biotics (safe during pregnancy).

Just to cheer you up.. someone told me once it's your body's way of preparing you for waking up in the night with the baby :)

Errmmm actually baby is worse as the don't just feed and go back to sleep but you have all that to come and find out.

Runs away.....

I had this too, still have a bit but not every night. Cereal before bed helped and I did get up a few nights for some toast and it made me feel a lot better.

docsarah · 27/01/2013 20:35

Yes, I got starving in the night - I'd wake up at 2 or 3 am, and be in a foul mood and totally unable to get back to sleep. It sounds daft but I didn't recognise it as hunger right away as my tummy wouldn't rumble for an hour or so, but a couple of digestive biscuits do the trick.

Eating something stodgy with some protein as late as possible helped - I went for pud with egg custard.

Girraferama · 28/01/2013 07:57

Thanks so much everyone! Took a picnic to bed with me last night and didn't end up needing it, but ate grapes as soon as I woke up (because I was already starving) and they did the trick straight away!
