Pregnancy vitamins in 2nd trimester

I'm just wondering has anyone continued to take vitamins after the first trimester and is there any benefit? Or am I just wasting money buying these expensive multi vitamins for pregnancy now I'm past the first trimester? Hmm

I am because of the vit D and other vitamins. If I was just taking folic acid then I would stop it in 2nd trimester.

ilovepowerhoop · 24/01/2013 18:38

have they got vitamin d in them? It is advised to supplement vitamin d in pregnancy and when breastfeeding.

I've been told its best to keep taking them all the way through for the vitamin D, if your diet is good then you're probably alright to just take a vitamin D supplement.

RubyrooUK · 24/01/2013 18:44

Do keep taking them. I have a great diet with lots of veg etc but turns out that my unborn child was such a sucker of my iron that by 29 weeks I was severely anaemic. I am never normally anywhere near anaemic on the same diet so it's worth carrying on.

Deegittus · 24/01/2013 18:52

I've been taking vitabiotics pregnacare plus but they last one month per box and are around £15 just thinking maybe if I found a cheaper option or carry on? Thanks for your replies it my first baby and I'm unsure of a lot lol!! Nice to ask advise from others! :)

I've carried on as recommend by mw but got tescos own which were on 3 for 2 and only £3 something

CitizenOscar · 24/01/2013 18:58

I usually take them but a bit more haphazardly - not every day - so they last a bit longer! Also I'd say cheapish ones would be fine & save money. In winter I think a few extra vitamins can be handy.

Deegittus · 24/01/2013 19:03

Thanks everyone!! Maybe I'll search a cheaper option! But stick to taking them as it maybe beneficial as I always have problems with iron usually so maybe that's why it's been fine sooo far!! :)

I've taken the asda own pregnancy ones and the pregnacare ones and they're almost identical apart from the price

MathsCat · 24/01/2013 20:23

I'm taking the pregnacare ones, but have found them for a lot less than £15 a month. I think I may have seen some that price in boots BUT they were the ones with extra omega 3 and a pack of 90, so 3 months worth. Tesco usually have them on 3 for 2 as well.

I plan on carrying on taking them in the 2nd trimester, not for folic acid but the other vitamins, an insurance policy in case my diet doesn't quite cut it!

RubyrooUK · 24/01/2013 20:44

Yes I think I have Superdrug ones that are a lot cheaper so you can definitely get them for a lot less. Or the Sainsbury's ones. You can find the non-Pregnacare ones for far less, definitely.

rrreow · 24/01/2013 21:09

I use the Superdrug ones as well, I think they're about £10 for 2 packets. I'm just running out now and I'm 20w. So they're quite affordable.

Eletheomel · 24/01/2013 21:17

I've never taken vitamins (in this pregnancy or with my son) other than folic acid.

I have been meaning to take vit D this time round, but not got round to it yet (ms put me off taking too many pills).

I think if you're diet was good before pregnancy and okay now, they're probably not essential (apart from vit D which is difficult to get enough of from food).

Littlemissexpecting · 24/01/2013 22:16

My midwife gave me some! I see her in a sure start centre, and I think they are mean for those who receives some sort of benefit/food vouchers etc either on lower income or under 18. I'm not but my me gives them to me anyway!! She says just to ask her if I need anymore. They contain folic acid, vit D and vit C.
If I didn't get these I would buy some

Paradisefound · 25/01/2013 10:46

I get pregnacare plus on amazon £7.95 for a months supply my midwife is adamant I take it throughout pregnancy. Definitely shop around.

LeBFG · 25/01/2013 12:29

There's good evidence that supplementing with vit D for winter babies is good for the developing bones. I'm in SW France and, despite the winter sun, all pregnant women in winter are given a mega dose of vit D in the second trimester that then guarantees levels for a long while. Most women get a bit low on iron as well so what's the harm in giving yourself a little boost there too?

Mrsblackcar · 25/01/2013 19:21

I got vitabotics pregnacare orignial from tesco, they were £8.99ish for 75 tabets and on 3 for 2 so £18 got me 225 tablets which i thought was pretty good!

I'm still taking the pregnacare vitamins. I wasn't advised by my mw to take vitamin D but I've read that it's recommended so I've just continued to take the same vitamin as it has agreed with me so far.

MrsRoss26 · 26/01/2013 08:03

This is timely for me as just entering second trimester and had been wondering how much benefit too continuing. mw gave me vitamins, even though I told her I had my own multivitamin at home. Will mix it up with my boots ones just to see how long they'll last! Boots were about £4?
