Any tips on coping with tiredness at work?

I am 8 weeks pregnant and started a new full time job, moving up on the career ladder, just three weeks ago (I didn't know I was pregnant when I took the job).

As much as I know I need to take it easy and feeling this tired is completely normal, I really need to impress my new boss and prove to her that my being pregnant won't stop me from doing a great job. Also, I'm on a three month trial period and don't want to give her any reason to let me go.

Any tips on coping with tiredness at work? I'm suffering from sickness so I'm finding it difficult to eat the foods I should be... but I'm almost falling asleep at my desk by the afternoons so any tips would be much appreciated.

Hi there, you could try a few things:

  1. drink plenty of water
  2. take a few breaks from your desk and go out and get some air when you can
  3. eat small light meals spread out across the day that wont send you to sleep in the afternoon - this should help the sickness too

I presume she doesn't know you're pregnant yet?

Open the window or get a bit of fresh air -often carbon dioxide levels increase in a office in the afternoon, making u feel sliggish. (Apparently!) x

Or even sluggish lol x

Sounds tough! I missed weeks 8-12 at work through a separate illness and Christmas so missed the worst of it.

Second the drinking water and getting up and stretching your legs as often as you can. Just moving around can help.

Oh, and if you're off tap water (like me), try sparkling water. Godsend. Good luck with new job.

I used to go sit in the disabled toilet and close my eyes for 10 mins Blush.

Really cold flat coca cola with ice helped me with morning sickness and tiredness. I'd open 2 cans in the morning and leave them in the fridge. Later the fiz didn't bother me so I had six packs of coke in the fridge at work. Good luck!

My boss does know, I told her in my second week because I had to go for an early scan due to bleeding. Everything was fine thankfully.
Although she knows I just don't want her to think it's going to be a big problem - she's just expanded the company to three people and worked as a sole trader for years before that, so she's never had to deal with an employee being pregnant before!

It doesn't help that she and the other girl we work with are the least maternal women I've ever met ha-ha. Thanks for your tips ill give them a try. I must admit I've done the same, closing my eyes in the disabled toilets!

I'm not sure what job you do but can you manage your daily routine so that your most difficult tasks are when you are at your brightest - for me that was morning.
I would schedule work that required me to walk to other floors in the afternoon so that the walk would freshen me up in the post lunch fog I'd be in.
Make a point of taking your breaks but make them sound useful... Eg I'm off to see joe bloggs and I'll do the coffee run while i'm at it and get them in for your colleagues! Gave me the time for a walk and a break!

Gerty1002 · 25/01/2013 17:06

That's a really good tip - but I'm afraid there's just three of us in one office - not much need for walking around! But I do try to do tea runs etc just to get even a little walk to the kettle and back.

I work in public relations, so it's pretty full on all of the time, either doing creative writing (definitely a morning task!) or chatting to journalists or clients! I have tried to schedule in my 'social media time' into afternoons wherever I can, which does seem to help :).

I've tried to make sure I get out for some fresh air at lunchtime, which is working wonders.

Thanks for all your tips everyone!
