Booking visit with midwife

Ok so advice please...

I went for booking appointment today. This is fourth pregnancy so have some experience of pregnancy, birth, raising children. Didn't think there was much that could throw me.

I told the midwife that I was feeling worse with sickness and dizziness than any of the other pregnancies. Was also showing much earlier which I know happens quicker with each bump after first. She laughed and and asked if I was still breastfeeding number 3 I which I replied yes.

She laughed more and said that because it was baby number four and I was still feeding and over 30 I could well be having twins.

Towards the end of the appointment I mentioned this to her and asked if she thought it was a serious possibility. She shrugged and said quite possibly.

I have now come away quite worried!

I am only 8+1 so have a while to wait for scan which would confirm or dismiss. No history of twins on mothers side and no IVF used for conception.

I think that over the age of 30 you're slightly more chance of having twins.

Never heard of a link between baby number 4 and/or breastfeeding though. I'd have said that the possibility of it been twins is small.

Every pregnancy is different with regards to sickness. Though already having three will probably mean you're a bit shattered which could make you feel sicker.

The chance of twins increases with maternal age. But part of the stats jump is down to ivf skewing the stats.

Don't know why BFing would increase your chances of twins though.

I'm a bit worried about twins. I have been really sick this time compared to last time. Only 9+4 so no scan here yet either.

Bad morning sickness can be a sign of twins. HG is more common in twin pregnancies, for example.

But none of the above are certainties or even all that likely.

I'm bf , over 30 and dc4 is only one baby.

If you are tall it can increase your chances of twins too -how tall are you?Grin

RB04 · 22/01/2013 20:24

Nope not tall and I have heard somewhere that still breastfeeding increases chances.

To be honest if she had not mentioned it I would not have even thought about it but now that little seed is there and a but worrying!

Thank you for responding!!

Causes of Twinning
MZ - causes still unknown. (There are slightly more than expected sets resulting from infertility treatment (drugs alone or IVF). The MZ twinning rate had been constant worldwide at about 3.5 per 1,000 maternities but there has been a slight rise recently.
DZ - the main factors associated with DZ twinning are infertility treatment, race (highest in Black Africans and lowest in Orientals), maternal age, parity, maternal height and weight and maternal family history of twins.
