24wks - no urine tests to date by MW

Is that normal? I keep reading that MW's do these at every appt. but mine hasn't done a single one yet. A consultant's appt. I had at 18wks had one (they found nitrites and gave me antibiotics). I have a MW appt. tomorrow and was wondering whether I should ask her to do one, or is it just optional and not necessary?

It's in the nice guidelines. It states when you should see the midwife and what they should do at each of they appts. My mw does mine at every appt but my local hosp are really hot on it and do urine and bp at every scan too.

Thanks Littlemiss - I'll mention the nitrites the consultant found and ask her to do a follow-up while I'm there.

They've done it at every one of my appointments so far, right from booking. They just check for protein levels in your urine - I think for signs of pre-eclampsia. I would mention it if I were you.

Thank you both for your responses - got tested and blood sugar was off the scale (should not have gorged on doughnuts in the morning....but they were looking at me!) - she's having me come back in for a follow up test next week. Well, at least they're being done now.

Good stuffs :)

Good luck fertility. How far along are you?

Pritchyx · 23/01/2013 22:30

I had my first wee sample at my booking appointment but physically couldn't force myself to have one. Then I had my scan at 12+2, never did one then, I had my 16-18 week check up with a nurse and not a midwife and she said everything was ok, had my 20 week scan and a repeat at 23 weeks, with both having no wee samples taken.. I have my 24 week appointment next week at 25 weeks as midwife was "overbooked" and wondering if I'll have it then... Highly doubt it.

lightrain · 23/01/2013 22:32

Just take the sample in when you go to the appointment, and present it to the midwife. Don't wait I be asked! They probably assume you've forgotten to bring it (which isn't great, of course! But happens).

MorganLeFey · 24/01/2013 14:52

I agree with lightrain - just present one to them for testing!

Lots of useful things to look for... protein (?pre-eclampsia), glucose (?gestational diabetes) and leucocytes/nitrates (?urine infection - which is more of a big deal in pregnancy).

fertilityFTW · 24/01/2013 16:52

I'm 24wks :)
Taking a sample in anyway is a great idea lightrain- I picked up a couple of sample bottles from the GP receptionist with just that in mind. MW seems quite overwhelmed most days, I expect it just slipped her mind. She asked me for my Downs Syndrome results, discussed them and then asked me whether I'd had my DS screening done 5 mins later Hmm.

just ask? i believe mw would have no problem, as the test can be done in seconds, really simple. it's always good to protect your own interest (the baby's).
