I'm 18 weeks and just had a call from the Doctor. He says my platelet count is low and my white blood cell count is high... Has anyone had this and what does it actually mean. I guess he's not too worried as wants to repeat the test next week... Any advice greatly appreciated Smile

I'm not a doctor but I think platelets are the part of the blood that causes blood to clot, low platelets could mean you bleed easily/for longer.
White blood cells fight infection so if you have a high white blood cell count this is a possible indicator your body is fighting an infection (could well be viral).

I imagine if dr wants to repeat the test next week then its just something they will keep an eye on. Hopefully it will resolve itself by then.

I'm almost 29 weeks. At my booking appt my platelets were fine (but very lowest end of normal) . At 28 weeks my platelets were low but the consultant said it wasn't a problem. They can drop in pregnancy (or the platelets may be larger so there are less in a sample). They are going to retest in two weeks though.

As far as I know they only cause a problem if they get very low and it can mean you may not be allowed an epi or be pushing too long. Consultant said it's unlikely to cause bleeding as its whether the uterus contracts or not that is the main cause of PPH (although they do look at RBC).

AFAIK white blood cells can indicate infection.
