i have been on the maternity ward since yesterday, got told this afternoon that i will be induced, either tonight or tomorrow morning, i just have to wait for labour ward to quieten down abit then they will get me straight up there for induction, so could be the middle of the night for all i know! but to anyone else who has been induced, what am i to expect? i am glad there is now an end in sight but also very scared Sad

Don't be scared. Just focus on the fact you e have a gorgeous baby soon :)

I was induced in September past. Was very scared but I found it truly amazing.

Had gas and air and one injection of diamorphine. My waters were broken at 11.40, drip started at 12.40ish and I had my baby boy at 10.03pm.

I had a very straightforward birth. Keep your options open on pain relief and just go with the flow.

Be prepared for I not to work right away, I had te pessary induction, like a tampon that they put in and leave for 24 hours, but I had 3 before it worked. Hope it's quick for you but don't get upset if its not xx

I've had that done twice.

First time, had the gel thing about 4pm, started getting period type cramps about 4am, taken to labour ward at 8am, waters broken at 9, slow but constant progress all morning, syntocin drip at 1pm to speed up contractions, started pushing at 5pm and baby arrived at 6.10pm.

Second time all the same til 5am, sudden increase in contractions at that point, straight down to labour ward, urge to push at 7am, baby here at 7.10 am!

Both times were fin, perfectly manageable. Second time was odd as I was expecting it to be just like the first time so for it all to go so fast was a bit of a shock but once I'd got my head around it I was delighted it was over and done with so quickly!

Best of luck!

It could take ages.

NICE guidelines say they shouldn't induce at night as it increases maternal dissatisfaction and intervention rates (probably as you end up with no sleep the night before so are knackered more than expected by the end

Stay as mobile and active as possible. Ask, ask, ask about everything they want to do, so you know what, why, how and the risk/benefit (eg waters being broken, drip, pessary, monitoring)

If you go on the drip, consider an epidural.

Whatever happens, however you shift your baby, that is what you'll get at the end - a whole new person who is coming to share your life and home Smile

In all honestly it's mainly quite boring! I was induced last August and its rather a fug now, a bit of a hazy memory. In the scheme of things not the worst way to deliver a baby.

I had an epidural as I had been advised to by a friend. It was uncomfortable to begin with but you soon get used to it. I was put on the drip around midnight and was ready to push around 8am. I even managed to (kind of) sleep for a couple of hours.

Pushing was certainty odd as I had very little feeling, however it only lasted about 20 minutes and suddenly I was a mother.

Please try not to worry, keep your eye on the amazing prize. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I was induced with DD2 in Nov. Two pessaries. They checked me at 6am but I didnt get taken to labour ward until 3pm because of staff issues.

They broke my waters at 3pm, I was already 4cm. I went on the drip at around 5.30. Things were moving along nicely until a midwife who wasnt caring for me upped the drip around 6.45. I went from 5 cm to 10cm and was pushing by 7.15! DD2 arrived at 7.33.

Think about having an epidural. However, I had remifentanil and I firmly believe I wouldnt have needed an epidural if that mw hadnt got trigger happy with the drip. As it happened, I requested one but DD2 arrived before the anaesthetist! :)

Dont be afraid to ask questions. And tell them you want the drip slowly! Good luck!

I have been told breifly what is going to happen and that yes it could take ages and the first gell thing may not work.

I did think it was abit strange they might induce me in the middle of the night but i suppose if it does take a while to work i.could still get some sleep, because i have one lazy baby lol

im not ruling out any pain releif il take anything lol if it gets really bad but obviously i am not going to know until it happens. i am one of those people that will think of the absolute worst it could b then anything better is a bonus and not so horrendous

Hugs for you :) you will be fine

My waters were broken at 6am and again at 8 because they didn't work, had a drip (not sure why)
They gave me some plain toast for supper the night before (12 hours?)

Ds was born at 4:38 pm :) I slept for most of the day before hand, I was lucky

Had a epidural but I wasn't examined before, so when epidural was done my son was already on his way out ... He was born before the 10 minutes it takes for the epidural to kick in ... Then I had to deal with the numb lower body after he was born :) no fun at all. I'm sure you will be fine. Have you concidered what pain relief you'll be having

I used the gas and air to get me through the main contractions, ill be having gas and air next time but not the epidural :)

Good luck :) xx

i have just been really annoyed and offended the mw came in to put some sexy stockings on me lol to reduce blood clots and the reason was because i have supposedly been smoking throughout my pregnany. i was like urmm no i quit the day i found out back in like may! she was like oh sorry someone wrote down u havesmoked throughout! it just really annoyed me because nobodys actually asked me and its written on my original notes non smoker. i just hope this isnt a sign of things to come when being induced and i am in labour ect, nobodys gunna know anything and will just b a total nightmare!

I was induced with my first baby in October last year. I felt very scared but once that pessary is in and you're in the thick of it, you end up just going with it. Mine took a long time but thats not always the case and I ended up with my beautiful baby boy and the couple of days spent in the induction suite are just a distant blurry memory. Good luck!!!

zannii · 16/01/2013 10:32

grrr still waiting! apparently there still really busy on labour ward! what i dont understand is in this hospital they do everything on the labour ward, the startvof induction until babys out, if there so busy up there why not start it off on the maternity ward because i am guessing nothing will happen for a while then send me up when i need to go, instead of having people potebtienally taking up a suite in labour ward for 2 days!
