Amniocentesis tomorrow...

I'm having amniocentesis at the foetal medicine centre tomorrow and I'm so nervous. I know it's the right decision for us but it still doesn't take the fear away... Blush

Can anyone reassure me with any experiences? DH is going to work from home Thursday & Friday and do the majority of the DD lifting and dog walking.

How sore will I be or will I be fine after?
Do I have to go with a full bladder or not eat or anything? I wasn't told.
How long did it take to get results? The website says three days but that would be Saturday so probably Monday at the earliest right?

Did they tell you the sex?

Thanks in advance. Can't sit still today!!

Hi Georgie
I had an amnio. It was totally fine. You can eat and don't need full bladder. I took it easy next couple of days but actually felt totally fine. My initial results came back in 3 days. They will tell you sex after the results if you want to know.
Good luck. Natural to be nervous but honestly it was really fine and you're going to a great place so I've heard.
Ps all my results were normal.

Hi curiousgeorgie I had a CVS at 13 weeks - had a bit of cramping but results were all ok and am now 23 weeks pg. natural to be worried but try to relax. Best of luck x

Just to reassure you - the agonising & worry beforehand is actually the worst! I had an amnio at 16 weeks, got the initial results back within 24 hours (on the NHS) & final results 2 weeks after the procedure. I had been told up to 5 working days for the initial results & 2.5 weeks for the final.

The actual procedure was fine, didn't hurt at all (similar level of pain to a blood test in your arm) & did not have any cramping or bleeding after. You will be scanned continuously during the test. The consultant will check the heartbeat straight after & if it's seen then the chance of miscarriage drops dramatically.

The main thing is not to worry!

Make sure you wear old clothes. & pants as the iodine used on your tummy can stain.

Thanks...

I'm just trying to hold on to the fact that this tomorrow it's all done!

It just suddenly feels so bad to choose to have this miscarriage risk. But I know it is right for us, we thought about it really long and hard.
