I found out at 5 weeks and quit by 6 weeks after reading alan carrs how to stop smoking the easy way book (if yiur tight like me you can easily find the free pdf version of this book online using google) Wink I was heavy 20 a day smoker had been for 6 years and simce finishing the last page of that book ive never touched another cigarette and im now 27 weeos pregnant with a much better sense of smell, taste and less breathlessness plus I know my baby isnt inhaling vile fag fumes because of me which is nice! I highly recommened giving that pdf a read I can try amd find it and post the link if you want? Sorry for any misspelling im on my phone! Smile

Speak to your GP or midwife ASAP and ask for help, the NHS offers various quitting services so you don't have to struggle on your own. I'm sure you're aware how important it is.

SucksToBeMe · 15/01/2013 00:57

That really is a great book, my uncle stopped as soon as he read it. My mum smoked 20+ a day for 30 years and finally gave up but had to read it twice! She said the second time she read it, it all just clicked for her.

I smoked through my first pregnancy, not proud but I was young and tbh I don't even know why I carried on because I could hardly stomache a cig during sick ess and it made me feel terrible. I stopped as soon as I found out with my 2nd, goin that easy as sick ess kicked in from the word go, an this time I stopped when the sickness kicked in about 8 weeks, but had cut down beforehand. Good luck xx

Stupid phone.....hope most of that makes sense

DoItToJulia · 15/01/2013 08:12

You are doing great to have cut down so much. I only managed to get down to one or two a day with both pregnancies rather than give up all together.

I gave up properly once ds2 was born. I didn't want to smell of smoke for him or faffing with brushing my teeth, showering and changing clothes after a fag. Why I couldn't do it while I was pregnant I just don't know.

It's not the end of the world, but clearly it's better if you don't smoke at all, which you already know!

Good luck with your pregnancy and trying to quit!

Good for you for being honest. This is the only time in your life that you will have this good of a reason to stop though so you should embrace it with everything you have. My dp smoked 20 a day for 14 years but stopped the day she found out she was pregnant with ds1. She was 5 weeks. She has never touched one since and that was almost two years. It was without a doubt the toughest thing she has ever done and she wanted to kill everyone for the first few weeks. She loves being a non smoker now. Not just for the health thing buy also because she saves 2.5k a year! Do it. The first three days are the worst. Best of luck.

Thanks everyone....did one day with none...major struggle, an next day had one at 4 coz felt I was gonna explode during tea time wiv older kids at home haha..

If I could lie in a bath and read all day then giving up wud be no problem but I can't. So far so good today....none...keep telling myself wait till later then later comes and I realise I had forgot haha.

Gonna read this book, just coz I wanna see how a book can stop u from smoking haha xxxxx

Thanks everyone xx

It's really hard but worthwhile thing to do so well done you. I used the mouth spray for the first couple of weeks. It really helped me - I think you should check with your midwife/Dr whether you are ok to use it as that's what it says on the packet but I figured it would be better than a cigarette. doesn't work for everyone though as it made my best friend hiccup!

Distraction also works, plan something nice to do with the money each week it gives you something other than smoking to focus on.

There is help out there, ask your mw. Well done on today, sounds brilliant. And congratulations. You can do this

sumrandomgirl · 16/01/2013 18:35

Speak to your Midwife!!!! My DP even gets support quiting because I'm pregnant. He gets NRT aids on prescription and a lady comes to our house to support him x

NellyBluth · 16/01/2013 20:44

Just wanted to say you're not the only one, I struggled massively when pregnant and occasionally smoked through my entire pg. It is such a difficult thing to do. Just take one day at a time, even ten minutes at a time - if you want a cigarette, just keep putting it off five minutes, ten minutes, see how long you can go. There is loads of support out there so speak to your mw. You're doing really well so far, good luck x

sumrandomgirl · 16/01/2013 21:31

Ended up borrowing a fag from next door, figured its better than buying 10 an won't be tempted to "finish this last packet'

Glad I ain't the only one who is still smoking, recon I will be borrowing a few fags along the way though. Kinda still don't wanna give up, this is the main problem...recon this will change wen I start to look pregnant. Hope so.
Thanks xx

Kinda still don't wanna give up, this is the main problem

This is how I felt. The whole way through my pg. And I started smoking again very soon after DD was born, I still smoke now (though obviously less, as you just don't have any time to yourself, so it's an evening treat for me).

It might help to not think about 'giving up'. You're not giving up if you don't want to. Obviously pg is the best time to quit, but if it doesn't stop you for good then - well, that's a different thing. Just think that for the next few months it would be best if you didn't smoke, or tried to cut down as much as you can. Each cigarette you don't smoke is great for your baby.

I also used the mouth spray and found it better than the gum or lozenges - the mouth spray is more of an instant hit than other forms are, so it helped get me through those 5 mins or so while I was desperate for a cigarette.
