Newborn nappy size?

Hello, I'm getting hospital bag together and was wondering what size nappies to get? I've found both size 1 and size 2 newborn but don't know which would be the best bet. Thanks!

Most babies will fit into size 1 for at least a few weeks and I imagine you would have been told by now if s/he was going to be more than 11lb!

Ah, thanks! I was looking online while doing grocery shop so couldn't see the package closely enough for weight info. I'll order size 1 :-)

I have just bought one small pack of pamper new baby size ones (to fit into hospital bag), then have a big bag of size twos - pampers baby dry that can last twelve hrs, so are much better overnight. (Have had 9lb5 and an 8lb8 before). Sainsburys have third off at mo.....

From pampers website:
Size 1 fit 4-7 lb
Size 2 fit 7-13 lb
Size 3 fit 9-15 lb

noblegiraffe · 14/01/2013 23:28

The pampers size 1 that I've got go up to 11lbs. I've bought a pack of 50 which should be enough for a few days then I'll reassess when I know how big the baby is!

From what I remember of newborns, they tend to poo every couple of hours or so, so 12 hour ones probably would be a bit ambitious at first!

I was constantly being told my baby would be big. I dont think 9lb is gibormous but he certainly doesnt fit size 1 although mum got me a pack to be safe. Ive been using the huggies newborn ones with no problems

LadyKinbote · 15/01/2013 08:32

Bear in mind some babies need size zero.. Don't buy them but check which of your local shops stock them just in case. (MW told me DD would be big but she turned out tiny and DH had to race round all the shops!)

Twattybollocks · 15/01/2013 08:59

Both mine used size 1 for several weeks, ds was just shy of 8lb and dd just shy of 7lb. They both had skinny little butts and the nappies gaped round the legs for at least a couple of weeks until they filled out a bit!

noblegiraffe · 15/01/2013 09:07

I've just double-checked my Pampers size 1 and they are definitely 4-11lbs, which should hopefully be a wide enough range for most eventualities. They are Pampers New Baby which might be different to the other Pampers range given upthread.

All the nappy sizes cross over a little dd was 8lb8oz and she wore size1's can't remember how long for but we had both pampers and huggies newborn and other shops and they were pretty much the same. You will find you go through the packs pretty quickly anyway as most babies like a fresh nappy to do a poo. I will be getting some size one and size two nappies in and then do a bulk order or get them with groceries once I know how big baby is.

PogoBob · 15/01/2013 09:21

DD was 8lbs 15 and wore size 1 for a fortnight, DS was 9 lbs 14 and was in size 1 for a week.

Both of them were long babies though and the size 1 nappies didn't come up high enough to their waist IYSWIM.

Snowflakepie · 15/01/2013 09:41

DD was only 7.1 when born and the size 1 pampers were just too small even then! Used them all but every single one leaked, size 2 were fine. So I have bought size 2 and we'll go from there. She was also long though, maybe that makes a difference. The hospital shop sells small nappies and there is a midnight boots 5 mins away, so if needed I think it will be fine. They do go through a lot in the early days though. And yes, all the brands seem to have different weights and fit, Huggies never fit DD but pampers are fine, my SIL found the other way round. So don't buy too many initially, see how it goes. You can buy nappies in a lot of places now.

HelenofSparta · 15/01/2013 11:10

noblegiraffe the twelve hr ones are much better at preventing leaking poos/stay drier to prevent nappy rash - no they will not go all night when they are little, but, in my experience (third baby), they are superior.

With my son the hospital provided nappies, so I bought none before he was born, before we brought him home I sent hubby out to buy some. He bought e right size for his weight in pampers/Huggies/shops own brand basically all e different types of nappies he could find. We used them up and discovered which ones we liked to use.
