Hello

This is my first pregnancy and I ate a little raw papaya salad and did not realise that it is widely known to cause miscarriages due to the latex.

Has anyone eaten this by mistake and been okay?

Am crying inside a little right now. Trying not to freak out too much.......

I had loads of this GORGEOUS salad (now I want some) when I was visiting family over Christmas, would have been about 14 weeks then and was totally fine. I suspect this is one of those overblown food issues; even if it has any applicability in real life, it almost certainly applies to enormous quantities of the chemicals in question.

Don't worry.

Elastigrrrl - thankyou SO much for such a reassuring message. I am freaking out over the tiniest little thing at the moment as we're coming up to the point where things went wrong before, so it's really nice to have a positive reply! I will step away from google (well, I'll try) Thanks again x

Yah I ate it a few times too. Dd is snoring next to me. Congratulations on your pregnancy, such an anxious time but it gets less scary further on. Flowers

Thankyou :) will try and relax!

I live in Mexico where this is pretty much a staple. I've eaten it ripe, unripe, covered in (probably unpasteurized) cream etc. and it's all been fine. I had the same panic about pineapple after spending 5 minutes on evil Google, but you have to eat SO much of it (like impossible amounts) for it to have an affect. Try not to worry!

I had never heard this! I love green papaya salad and make it myself often.

Elastigrrrl · 22/04/2014 11:55

Mmm, yes to pineapple! Have been addicted to it throughout and despite looking through the research, not yet seen one shred of good evidence to suggest it's problematic, just people spreading random rumours. Not that I'm encouraging anyone to eat it if they're not comfortable, just sharing my (heavily fruit-dependent) experience.

I did the same thing😭. I unfortunately ate a green,un rapid papaya for the first time in my life. I would never thought that papaya or fruits in general could cause harm.I ate small pieces but i am freaking out. I called the doctor and she told me to stay away from it from now on but she did not seemed to be ok with it. I am so scared. Tell me it turned to be ok please.

You should start your own thread @Manoosh not resurrect one from 8 years ago

Don’t worry about it, one papaya won’t hurt your baby xx

I remember going to a sushi place the next day I found out I was pregnant with my first baby. Didn’t know raw fish was a no-no and freaked out when I found out. The baby was just fine xx

I agree with the advice above. If these things were genuinely high risk for miscarriage then they would be widely known and used as DIY abortion methods.

I love som tam. I can’t see myself staying away from it for the next six months. (Although for people who are craving it and are more cautious, swede is a surprisingly good substitute for green papaya!)
