Been pondering about this for a while. are you, as a pregnant really bothered about how much weight you gain during pregnancy? I didn't put much weight on and wasn't really that conscious about it, but am interested to know if this is a big issue for other women? Thoughts anyone?

No not really. But then I do exercise and eat healthily - am 23 weeks pg with DC2. Was more cavalier with DD1 I put on 3 stone but as soon as I had her I went back to eating healthily and excercising and it was gone in five months. This time round more bothered about putting it on - as had morning sickness till 20 weeks. Still have managed to put on a stone now so am happy.
I love my body at the moment!

octanegirl · 11/01/2013 16:32

Yes. I didn't want to get huge as I want to get back to normal after and the fatter I get the harder it will be. I'm now 40+2 so hopefully about to start losing it very very soon!

I've really struggled. I've put on a stone per trimester so far. I keep telling myself - practically each day - that when the pregnancy is over, I can go hell for leather exercising to get the weight off. A small part of me is worried about it constantly. I don't wear nice clothes anymore, I just rotate the same three hoodies with 'lounge' trousers as my size 14 jeans - bought thinking they'd do me for the entire length of my pregnancy - are already too small. I was a size 10 before I got pregnant. I feel a bit... disgusting, to be honest. Another trimester to go, yay...

MisselthwaiteManor · 11/01/2013 17:16

I'm not too concerned, I'm hungry all the time and I eat when I want to, it's early days for me though (15 weeks) so I might change my
mind when the weight starts piling on!

I am a little big worried tbh.. I was already very overweight at 107Kgs size 20 bottoms when I got pregnant so I am scared of 1.passing this on to the baby 2.get so out of control that I will never be able to be a healthy size...
having severe morning sickness at the moment and don't think I've put on much but I will soon as I cannot seem to eat a lot of healthy food.
I'm 10+5 so praying it gets easier soon and I can eat better x

Creamtea1 · 11/01/2013 18:25

Yes totally worried -put 3 stone or more with both previous pregnancies and don't intend to do the same this time. When I got pregnant this time I was the lightest I have been for years and years and really watching what I eat.

badguider · 11/01/2013 18:28

I'm desperate to stay fit but don't mind if I get heavy so long as I'm still relatively mobile (spd or other medical conditions allowing) and strong - I can't near the thought of my muscles all turning to marshmallow.

babyradio · 11/01/2013 18:41

Been wondering this myself. I've always been paranoid about my weight and had a pretty unhealthy body image generally so the idea that I actually had to be fine with gaining weight was quite scary to me. Had a few tears in Doctors appointments and so on but nobody made me feel stupid, I realised it's in my head and my baby is more important than being a size 8. I ended up losing quite a lot of weight because I was so ill during the first trimester and found myself for the first time ever worrying about being too skinny! So I really had a "you know what, I don't care" attitude over Christmas. I'm 19 weeks now and trying to give myself a break, accept gaining weight is going to happen and remind myself I'm not supposed to be dieting like everyone else seems to in January, but at the same time not going mad. So if I want a McDonalds I'll have one but I won't have one every day if you see what I mean! I also read some woman saying that it takes almost a year to make the baby so give yourself an equal amount of time to get back to normal after, which has helped.

Eletheomel · 11/01/2013 18:44

I'm not worried about this at all, I think you put on as much as you need (unless you suddenly go mad and live off chocolate and deep fried food for 9 months!)

I put on 3 stone with my son and by the time he was 4 months old, I had lost 4.5 stone (no dieting, just breastfeeding and carrying a colicky baby for hours a day or pushing him in the pram for 90 minute walks!)

I acknowledge that might not happen this time, but if it doesn't then there is always steady dieting, ultimately whatever you put on took 9 months, so I'm thinking 9 months to a year to take it off again (or even 2 years, I'm not dieting with a newborn that's for sure :-)

So far, (I'm 20 weeks) I've only put on about 2lb due to morning sickness which is just starting to go away, but I fully expect to make up for it once my appetite returns (in fact, I can't wait!)

CityDweller · 11/01/2013 19:02

I'm aware of it, and I weigh myself regularly and compare my weight to a weight-gain chart I downloaded, but even though I'm currently a couple of lbs over the upper suggested limit for my term (28 wks) I'm not doing anything about it, so I guess I'm not that worried. I've spent most of my life, as many women have, worrying about my weight and body image and am trying to let that stuff go during pregnancy and I'm really quite enjoying my new shape (aah, the liberation of no longer obsessing about a flat stomach!). But I'd be lying if I didn't admit that I often think about what my total gain will be and how long it'll take me to lose weight and whether I'll ever get back to my peak fitness/ weight/ muscle tone.

Twattybollocks · 11/01/2013 20:41

Yes I'm very bothered. 2 reasons really, first, the more I put on the more I have to lose which isn't easy with a young child. Second, I was quite overweight when I got pregnant this time so it's healthier for me and baby if I restrict my weight gain. At the moment Im 35 weeks and weigh about. 2lb less than I did when I got pregnant, so theoretically I have lost 9-10lb I reckon.

Overreactionoftheweek · 11/01/2013 20:47

Ds is 14 months and I am really regretting how much weight I put on! I'm 5'6 and weighed 14 stone at my heaviest...although I was already overweight before pregnancy (think 12.5). Now I'm seriously dieting to try and shift it, so if I do have a second, I will be careful what I eat.

Queazy · 12/01/2013 15:28

I wasn't bothered until I read that at only 8 weeks, I shouldn't have put on anything and...I've put on 7lbs!! I can't afford new clothes yet, and worried what size I'll be in 3 months time. I guess sooner or later it'll hopefully be a beautiful bump, which will make my bum look a bit smaller than it does now :)

Msbluesky32 · 12/01/2013 15:39

queazy you will in the first few weeks, don't worry about it - eating little and often is the best thing for the sickness.

I put on about 10lb in the first 12 weeks, but I've have three colds and a bout of flu which knocked me for six so I haven't gained much more since then (Im 28 weeks now)

reastie · 12/01/2013 15:47

When I was pg I had horrific nausea. The only thing that marginally helped was eating. I felt sick for the whole 9 months so put on alot of weight 4 stone in addition to the weight of DD (I only weighed myself post birth!). There was no way I could do anything else other than cope and get by by eating what I could manage to help the sickness. Post birth I had ravenous hunger caused by bfing and continued putting on weight - at my heaviest I was 5 stone heavier than pre preg which was when DD was nearly 1 and still on 3 feeds a day. As soon as I dropped her down to one feed a day the hunger became manageable and without realising it I dropped a stone. I've been working at it since then and I've now lost over 4 stone, but still have 1/2 a stone or so until my pre preg clothes fit. I had an awful self image when pg and when DD was a baby as I put on so much weight, but my nausea was so bad and I am an emetophobe so I couldn't do anything else at the time. It might not have been the healthiest thing for my body to put on so much weight but I'm getting back to my old size so the gain will only be temporary. I think so long as you are careful within reason and don't use pg as an excuse to live on cake for 9 months it's a time when you shouldn't be too fixated on weight.
