We call our friends boy Bassy or Sebby and he is a huge lump of a boy deffo not effeminate!!

HappyMumof2 · 19/04/2006 20:37

Owen Christopher

Sebastian a bit much imo

JoolsToo · 19/04/2006 20:39

None of them appeal to me that much (sorry!) but I'd choose Sebastian Edward

foundintranslation · 19/04/2006 20:39

Sebastian Edward

hi :)

lucy5 · 19/04/2006 20:40

Sebastian Edward although I prefer it the other way round.

Ledodgy · 19/04/2006 20:42

I like Sebastian. I think the best way of choosing boys names is to imagine meeting them in a bar and shaking their hand when they're in their 20s and them saying "Hi i'm ......" and whether or not the name sounds plausible or not.

Ledodgy · 19/04/2006 21:33

Oh God Emkana I just realised the original post was from you. I'm so sorry if my post seemed really tactless I know you're facing so much uncertainty about the future right now. Just wanted you to know i've been thinking about you and am so sorry if i've offended you with my flippant post.

emkana · 19/04/2006 22:09

Not at all ledodgy, don't worry.

The good thing about Sebastian as a name is that it's also a German name.

Hi FIT! Smile

I remember it Cod........somewhere in my distant mid-80s youth.

Prefer Owen Christopher.

edam · 19/04/2006 22:17

Owen Christopher. Just because I like Welsh names and Owen in particular.

Sebastian just reminds me of the time I went to Foyles on Charing Cross Road (famously eccentric large book shop), asked a question, and assistant called melodiously across the store 'Sebahhhstian...' only to have three effeminate posh boys answering.

edam · 19/04/2006 22:18

PS I do quite like posh boys, but you woudn't want to stereotype someone from the off, would you?

emkana · 19/04/2006 22:20

This is so interesting because I haven't got these connotations in mind at all when hearing the names, due to me being foreign Wink

So is there a consensus that

Owen = norty name (Grin enid)
Sebastian = posh boy name?

OP posts:
Ledodgy · 19/04/2006 22:22

I think Sebastian can sound posh , good upbringing etc but Seb can also sound im really cool, working class and like strumming on my guitar it's versatile imo.

Miaou · 19/04/2006 22:26

Sebastian Edward.

lurve the name Sebastian (and I like Seb too)

edam · 19/04/2006 22:33

Owen's not norty, it's powerful, like Owain Glyndwr, the last Welsh prince (before the English took over by cheating).

emkana · 19/04/2006 22:39

I hear what you're saying edam Grin
but I think dh and I are gradually leaning towards Sebastian atm.

Will just be glad to finally have a name, boys' names are just soooooooo difficult.

(In spite of this hellish pregnancy - or because of it - I'm now considering having another one after this - maybe just to get a chance to use the lovely girls' name I had lined up - Matilda!)

Detta · 19/04/2006 22:44

There's a very well-known film about a gay man called Sebastian, so in my mind it always has connotations of campness. Much prefer Christopher.

suedonim · 20/04/2006 02:01

Sebastian Edward, then I can fulfill my dream of naming a baby Sebastian! Smile

eidsvold · 20/04/2006 10:35

Sebastian Edward is my preferred name out of the two.

Emkana we had that problem with dd1 - thank goodness she was a dd we had no boys names picked - with dd2 had a boy's name right off and only decided on her middle name the day before my c-section.

I do like Ledodgy's thinking though... also being an ex-teacher I try to imagine what children will turn it into?!?!?!?!

But Seb/Sebastian yup like it.

eidsvold · 20/04/2006 10:35

Matilda - fit right in over here Smile

SecondhandRose · 20/04/2006 10:49

Little Britain has a lovely Sebastian. It has to be Owen for me.

Nbg · 20/04/2006 10:58

I like both but am swayed more towards Sebastian Edward.

flobbleflobble · 20/04/2006 19:46

I think the most famous Sebastian is Sebastian Flyte from Brideshead Revisited - that's why I said toff and effeminate, because that describes the charcter in the novel/TV series. He also carried around a teddy called Aloysius (as a grown up).

The other names you suggested don't point to a particular character in the way that Sebastian does. And probably only people of my age or older would think of Sebastian Flyte. The only other famous one I can think of is Seb Coe.

emkana · 20/04/2006 19:51

I think Sebastian looks likely because dh isn't that keen on Owen, that was more my choice.

Dh really wanted Oliver, but I vetoed that.

It's very difficult, isn't it?

Dd1 made me laugh, she said to dh "Mummy's having the baby, so she should decide!" Grin

sebastian is a fave of mine, considered for ds3 shortened to Bas for nickname purposes, though it does have connotations of tory mp's for me but one can live with these things Wink
