I'm 9+5 and found out a few months ago I've got group b strep, my question is I've been getting discharge same consistency of mucus plug but green exactly same as snot when you get cold blush it did happen last pregnancy but only to the end of it. So my question is could this be related to the group b strep?

I don't have any other infections or anything, had swabs 3wk ago as I was bleeding xx

Please please please make sure you get the appropriate treatment - a friend of mine gave birth to a healthy girl who got strep b during birth and the hospital missed it so she was v poorly.

I'm not trying to scare you, not at all, but please make sure you talk to the mw about it

Xxxx much love and luck xxxx

Hi, I had group b strep about ten years ago, I didn't notice anything different with the discharge so do get that checked out to be on the safe side. You must also tell your midwife, make sure it's in your notes and on your birth plan, if ever you have had it in your life you need to be on an antibiotic drip while you give birth (I had one midwife that said I didn't but have since had 2nd and 3rd opinions that all say you should)

feetlkeblocksofice · 07/01/2013 18:19

When i had DD I also had group B strep, just make sure they are aware, a vaginal birth is possible as long as you get at least 2 lots of Antibiotics during labour. I didn't have a discharge with the GBS so do get it checked out ASAP (mine was picked up on a routine swab pre pregnancy, but once you test positive they always treat pregnancies as being positive).

bigkidsdidit · 07/01/2013 18:26

It's not TMI

About 30% of the population have it at any one time. But we clear it, get it again, clear it etc - which is why the NHS don't offer routine testing.

I had it when I gave birth to DS. It was fine - I had antibiotics on labour and he was kept in hosp (with me, normal ears) for 24 hours.

You must test yourself r request a test at 37ish weeks pg. until then there's no point as you might clear it naturally.

Normal ward not ears Grin

I had it, noticed at 30 odd weeks that I had a bit of whiffy discharge.
Got a swab done and it was only when I rang the GP at 38 weeks asking if they had had the results back that they noticed.
Had an emcs in the end but they monitored dd every two hours after it just to be sure.
I wrote group b strep on my notes as I didn't see the mw again before going into hospital to have her.
I felt really yuck and like I was a leppar until one of the older mws explained what it was. I thought I'd got an STD somehow!!

bigkidsdidit · 07/01/2013 18:34

Sorry for multiple posts but this is interesting.

NHS say if they tested everyone, hey think 25% of all pg women would be positive. Interesting no?

I have never heard that ever testing positive means you need ab in labour in subsequent births. I am having a home water birth this time fingers crossed and my me hasny said anything. I might start another thread asking that specific q.

Talk to your mw OP - good luck and don't be embarrassed.

bigkidsdidit · 07/01/2013 18:39

Sorry again for posting a million times Blush
Just found a paper (am a medical scientist) saying 'there is no evidence a woman colonised with GBS in one pregnancy will be on the next'. Also another saying 'there is no value in testing more than five weeks before birth'

Read this

I wasn't tested last pregnancy so not sure if I had it but Ive been tested 4x now in last 8 months and its always been there. Conviniently I've just had my booking appointment so midwifes aware and its on my file (it was anyway because epu recorded it 2wks ago) I spoke about the horrible glob which really does resemble my mucus plug I lost with ds2 although only been just short of 10wk I doubt thats possible, she just said keep an eye on it and get it checked out if gets any worse xx

Hi i had it in last pregnancy but didn't get told i needed antibiotics, son didn't have it but only found this out after he'd been put on antibiotics for 48 hours - not good & a hospital cock-up! Am due this Friday & told i have to get to hospital in good time to have antibiotics in labour to keep baby safe. Basically you are entitled to have a meeting to.discuss all this with hospital, more babies die of group b per year than whooping cough so force issue with midwife if needs be, not worth the.risk. Let me know if you need more info on labour & antibiotics. Good luck x

bigkidsdidit · 07/01/2013 20:34

Yes, just keep mentioning. Write a post it saying 'I have GBS' and stick it to the front of your notes Grin this is what I did

When you go into labour, ring the hosp early and say 'I'm only having a contraction every 6 mins (or whatever) but I have GBS, I need the antibiotics, shall I come in now?'

beckie90 · 07/01/2013 20:40

Yes will do, I always request to go in early anyway so I'm in safe hands due to the problems I had with ds1 during labour n after, I just waited on ante natal before I reached 4cm last time so I could be monitored and checked xx

Think it's important you follow all the ladies advice here but just wanted to say that may not be linked with the cm, I too had the same thing around 10wks, jelly snot like and abit green and had it again a week later and a few times since ( now 20wks) I thought it was plug but after googling realised its quite common and a few women on threads had the same so don't worry unnecessarily about that, think there's been some threads recently

beckie90 · 07/01/2013 21:01

I had it with ds2 but it was my plug in that case, started loosing it early bit no were near this time, also got really strong belly n backache, midwife didn't seem too bothered, just slightly concernes me cause back last year when doctor at family planning tried to fit my coil it kept falling straight back out and she said your cervix appears to be damaged and quite open. So now I've got that in my mind xx

There is a website that explains all about Gbs and how you can get tested when pregnant etc. Its www.gbss.org.uk

I had it in my last pregnancy and so was given an antibiotic drip for the duration of my labour and had been told that I would need to go into hospital as soon as I went into labour, for this. Had to stay in for a couple of days as a precaution, to monitor baby afterwards as well.

I never had discharge like you discribe but did think I had perminant thrush, which was how I ended up being tested at the day assessment unit after a bleed.

Midwife this pregnancy thought I should be tested as had it before, but consultant said no. Will be paying for a private test at 36 weeks (next week) after learning the risks during last pregnancy. Test is only £35 and I felt I wanted it for peace of mind. Having said this a lot of women give birth never knowing they have it and there are no problems, but felt if there was any possibiity of problems I could of prevented, then I wanted to do so.

Have a look at the website so you can make an informed choice.

IdaClair · 08/01/2013 11:34

Yes I had it early in pregnancy but no problems with it, I was high risk for having a premature baby which is why I was tested for everything all the time and it was treated just in case in caused me to have another very early baby, but that's my own personal risk factor, they pounced on anything because they didn't know why I was losing babies. Anyway it was fine and I wasn't tested for it again and I didn't have a premature baby I had a lovely home birth instead.
