Breathlessness even at rest

Hi all, I'm 15+4 and over the last 2 weeks I have started getting really breathless even when I'm resting. It's getting pretty uncomfortable and not only affecting me during the day but also now keeping me awake/waking me up at night. Does anyone have any advice please?!

I've had this a lot - from week 15 until 17 - am just coming out of it now at 17w 4d.

Consultant and midwife both said it was hormonal, due to increased level of progesterone, but that if I got worried I was to see the doctor to get him to check my chest. I was getting breathless just sitting down!

It has eased off but I did get a bit scared a couple of times. Worth checking with your doctor if you're worried (I'm having twins so have high hormone levels anyway at present)

I had horrible breathlessness with dc3 last year. It was a whole host of things as it turned out but at your stage it was due to dehydration (I started having to lug around giant bottles of water to make myself drink more) and low iron levels. Oh and I only slept on my side as being on my back made it worse.
Def pop to gp.

Please go and see your doctor. It may be something as simple as hormonal changes, or it could be something serious such as a blood clot, PE. You can't tell and neither can anyone else on here.
Please make an urgent appointment to see your doctor.

Tinsel I am already on a preventative dose of Clexane due to a previous DVT in my leg. The doctor listened to my chest 2 weeks ago and was unconcerned as no pain when breathing, coughing, etc - just damned uncomfortable but reassuring to know that I'm not only one and this will pass. Will ask for blood test to rule out anaemia. Thanks Ladies x

Can also be anaemia, as stupid and unrelated as it sounds! Get it checked out.

worldgonecrazy · 03/01/2013 08:16

Definitely best to get it checked out. I had similar and the hospital did loads of tests just in case it was a blood clot. Turned out it was a pregnancy-related heart murmur due to increased blood volume. Just meant I had to take it really easy for the rest of the pregnancy.

If you've had a previous DVT I'd be even more concerned. Just because you're on a preventive dose of clexane that doesn't mean you can't get a clot. In fact it makes me even more suspicious. If you're so breathless it's affecting your sleep then something is not right. Please go back to your doctor.

Oh and listening to your chest will be of no benefit if it's a PE, you can't usually hear anything unusual, and lack of pain does not disprove it. You should have your oxygen levels checked and you may need to be referred for more tests. Hope you are better soon.

Thanks for mentioning this. I've noticed it a lot the last few weeks and an going to discuss it with my midwife next Tuesday. Because I'm at 22 weeks and have gained some weight I assumed it was that but maybe not eh? Hopefully it's not something bad OP.
