an odd symptom perhaps but for the last week or so i have been REALLY thirsty - no matter how much i drink it just doesnt seem to go away. i have been trying over the last couple of days to make sure i drink about 2.5l of water but i am still thirsty, especially when i wake up. i am a bit worried as my mum is diabetic and i know that they want to test me for gestational diabetes at 28wks. should i be worried? has anyone had this and its gone away?

Hi there - I know nothing about diabetes so can't help with that. But I did read in my pregnancy book last night that it's normal to have a constant stuffy nose and to feel dehydrated. They suggested staying away from overheated rooms or those with air conditioning as this makes it worse.

I am also constantly thirsty, I drink over a litre during the night!

I presume any worries about diabetes, you should ask a GP?

Good luck!

I had this, turned out to be nothing, but ring your mw re: the diabetes.

I think it's important to always check over your concerns with your midwife, give them a quick call.

I was extremely thirsty too for about a month-6 wks but it got better.

Just had the gtt test for diabetes, which was planned before I got the wierd thirst thing, but yes tell mw or doc anyway. My doc had no ideas as to why but I had other complications too which have been resolved now.

Just drink lots of water, watch salt intake and good luck with the test. Im waiting to hear back at mo but sure will be fine.

See your gp. They can put a dipstick in a urine sample and see if diabetes is your problem, it'll take 2 minutes.

If it is diabetes, you're thirsty cos your blood sugar is high, and that is really not good for your baby.

Might be nothing, but it's easily checked.

PandaOnAPushBike · 02/01/2013 14:10

It's pretty normal. Your blood volume is increasing by 50% (I think) and you have to drink tons to compensate. I found it was worst in the first 3/4 months, ie when the volume was increasing, and has lessened off quite a lot since. I still wake up with a bit of a headache due to not drinking during the night though. (now at 23 weeks)

I asked my consultant about this on mon as I'm constantly thirsty and its worse at night, they did the dipstick test and there were no sugars they said so they weren't concerned and just said to keep an eye on it.

thankyou for your replies. i am due to see the MW in a couple of weeks so i will definitely mention it then. i feel a bit bad about bothering them with it before, as i feel ok in every other respect. i still am 13/14 weeks so in early days so maybe it is just blood volume increasing?
