protein in urine

I have never had pre eclampsia with previous pregnancies and this is my fifth. Does this mean it is highly unlikely I will get it this time around?

Last urine check with midwife showed high protein levels in urine. Sample sent off to check for UTI but has come back clear.

Blood pressure has gone up from 55/95 to 70/110, but I have no idea what this means really, just know that I generally have quite low blood pressure.

What can cause hight protein levels in urine at 32 weeks? Should I be concerned.

There are various risk factors for pre-eclampsia, including your own personal and family history, if its your first child or if you had pre-eclampsia in a previous pregnancy, and if you are under 20 or over 40, or obese etc etc.

I would say that even if you are low risk, there is always a risk that anyone can get pre-eclampsia, which is why they always check your urine and BP.

I was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia with my first at 39 weeks. Very high levels o protein in urine and high bp. A month before I'd had a urine result that had some protein in it, but htey redone it and the follow up results were clear. I was clear every week after that until week 39 - so the earlier protein was just a blip, it wasnt until week 39 that it really developed for me.

If your recent urine sample was clear and your BP is okay, then I'd try not to worry, but if you are concerned raise it specifically with your midwife, don't let yourself be worried by it.

My recent urine sample was clear of a UTI not clear of protein.

My midwife was slightly concerned that my blood pressure had started to go up and was very concerned about the protein levels in my urine. She thought it could be cause by a UTI which is why it was tested for that. Just wondered what else could cause high protein levels and how much your blood pressure would need to go up before there is cause for concern.

Did you have a sterile bottle from the surgery to put your sample in? Some surgeries have stopped giving out sterile bottles and as a result samples can be contaminated by whatever was in the jar beforehand (for instance if you're using some kind of receptacle from home).

I had hbp in pregnancy and they got worried when the bottom number went over 100 so 110 is a bit high. If you have protein in urine it is one of their signs for pre-eclampsia but doesn't mean you have it, unfortunately it just means you'll be monitored more, I got sick of it but it does end!! Hope all goes well

NAR when are you going back to see your midwife? When is your next urine sample due? I think you should raise your concerns regarding pre-eclampia with her when you next see her - if only to get her to rule it out.

It may be that the protein amount in your urine was low, which made it less likely to be PE and more likely to be a UTI.

When I was taken in with suspected PE, I had four plus protein in my urine sample, which is the highest amount and so it was an easy diagnosis.

I think you really need to contact your midwife and discuss this with her.

I was given the little stick to take to the toilet and wee on, during the appointment, so it wasn't contaminant from a container.

The midwife I saw was covering leave for my normal midwife and said the protein level was very high, but has just wrote protein+ in my notes, which doesn't suggest very high.

Phoned my gp this morning and he said I should come into the surgery every week for the nurse to check my blood pressure and test my urine for protein levels.

Will be seeing my midwife in 2 weeks, so will talk to her about it then. She is on leave until then. Just seemed a long time to wait, so was wondering if any mumsnetters had any answers for me.

Thanks everyone.

Had protein in urine and blood pressure checked today (under gps advice) and protein still there but only low and blood pressure has gone up some more. Need to wait until midwife appointment next week now to see if blood pressure increases any more and will talk to her about what this means.

I'd be phoning your midwife today - PE can develop rapidly & without symptoms. Please don't wait 2 weeks.

Its only a week now until midwife appointment and she is on annual leave at the moment.

If it was caused by PE would be protein levels in my urine not continue to go up also? Nurse who did the checks today seemed to think all was fine now.
