Ive read the research etc about sleeping on left side but keep turning myself over in my sleep- waking up on right side, my OH keeps turning me over too but nothing is working- tried wedging myself in with pilllows no joy.... Am I gonna have to tie myself to the flipping bed unless you lovely people have better suggestions??

I don't think it's really all that important! I can't sleep on my left side either, but DS seems to be ok... Xmas Wink

i can't get to sleep on my left side i have to be ibm my right but i toss and turn all night anyway i think if it was a problem your body would be letting you know so don't panic important 41 weeks today and i don't think it has harmed my little one in any way as long as you are comfortable

BluddyNora · 30/12/2012 16:04

Just sleep however you can!

GalaxyDisaStar · 30/12/2012 16:05

It matters v v little. A far greater benefit to you and your baby will be a good night's sleep on your other side!

Congratulations.

That research has been criticised as invalid anyway afaik because it was based on interviewing bereaved parents rather than proper scientific experiments. And lets face it, if you're in the middle of grieving for a stillborn baby, you're probably not in the best place to answer numerous questions about sleeping positions.

weeblueberry · 30/12/2012 16:33

Please try not to worry about it too much. As long as you're not sleeping on your back I wouldn't be concerned.

BionicEmu · 30/12/2012 17:21

I was worried about this too. I asked my women's physio about it and she said the most important thing is that you get some sleep! Iirc the problem with sleeping on your back is that the weight can compress your vena cava (I think?) , but she said that'll make you dizzy and feel awful so you'll wake up anyway.

She said she'd even had women who slept on their fronts all the way through somehow and they were fine!

DolomitesDonkey · 30/12/2012 17:24

I slept on my front and my right. Never in my life have I slept on my left, it's just wrong.

I have 2 beautiful healthy boys and you should see the crazy positions they sleep in. Grin

Wheels79 · 30/12/2012 18:10

My physio said that sleeping on my right (most comfortable for my back) was fine.

Radiator1234 · 30/12/2012 19:40

I was/am a bit paranoid about it too but asked the MW and she said any side is fine.

ILoveSaladReallyIDo · 30/12/2012 19:45

I sleep all ways round, can't help it I fidget all night!

someone on here had actually read the research and it didn't make sense because they said that only sleeping on L side the night before a still birth had any significance, the nights leading up to it showed no significant difference, however most babies had been dead for a week so the night before made no difference IYKWIM

ILoveSaladReallyIDo · 30/12/2012 19:46

sorry I mean NOT sleeping on L side the night before, but then the night before didn't matter so..

tinkletinklestar · 30/12/2012 20:59

I would try not to worry about it, if baby is uncomfortable or your squashing something you will be woken with kicks or pain.

Im 36+3 and i can only fall asleep on my right side, i always wake up on my back. if i lay on my left for to long i get several kicks until i move.

Do what is comfortable for you. sleep is the most important thing

stowsettler · 30/12/2012 21:34

I change sides regularly all night, and often wake up on my back. I don't feel dizzy or strange when I do that, although in the past week or so the weight of the baby has pressed on my kidneys whilst on my back (am now 33+4) so that's no longer as comfortable as usual.
It's really not important though. I mean - REALLY not important. Hell, only a few short decades (centuries?) ago they didn't even know about the vena cava, and yet the human race is still here...
