Non-sickly drinks for Christmas dinner?

I'm pregnant with DC2 and still suffering pretty grim MS, so I've been more or less off booze this pg (I did have the occasional drink with DS1). We normally have a special Belgian Christmas beer with our duck on Christmas day, but I'm stuck for a non-alcoholic alternative that's similar in style and not so sweet that I can't drink more than one glass. Normally, I would have wine or beer with food, so I find all the suggested alternatives (fruit juice, elderflower cordial, Schloer-type drinks) far too sickly to have with food. Any suggestions? Or am I stuck with sparkling water? Sad

Rock shandy

2 tablespoons Roses lime cordial
3 dashes Angostura bitters /this is alcoholic but a minimal amount
Cold sparkling water

Becks blue

Non alcoholic wine?

Agree tonic water is lovely too. Ice and a slice and you can pretend it's g and t.

I have just bought some grapefruit flavoured fizzy water. I hope it's nice, I too am not keen on sweet drinks.

If I don't want to drink I love a tonic water with ice and a slice. I buy Fever Tree which doesn't contain any artificial sweeteners.

Also cranberry juice topped up with sparkling water is pretty grown up and not sweet.

Virgin sea breeze is nice, grapefruit and cranberry. If too fruity/juicy you could add soda, or tonic might work. Or how about ginger ale and lime with loads of ice?

DaveMccave · 23/12/2012 15:08

Non alcoholic beer deffo. I find fizzy stuff really helps with my sickness, and lemony limey stuff. I really like the volvic cloudly lemon water at the moment, but otherwise, just soda water with a slice.

a bitter lemon?

Erdinger do good alcohol free beer.

Ooh, thanks for the suggestions, everyone! I love the sound of the rock shandy (don't have a problem with drinking alcohol when pg in principle, it's just that 'proper' alcoholic drinks make me feel sick at the mo). Ginger ale and lime appeals, too. Interesting that so many are saying tonic water - I tried that when pg with DS, but found it too sweet for a whole evening's drinking. Maybe that was my fault for buying cheapo own-brand stuff, though!

When I went to a wedding last time, I spent the evening drinking tomato juice, which was fine, but maybe not so good with Christmas dinner!

I did some googling after my first post and found some articles about a range of 'adult soft drinks' made by a guy called Peter Spanton. They sound pretty interesting too - anyone tried them?

Probably. They are full of artificial sweeteners. Fever Tree is the only brand I know that doesn't. Even Schweppes non diet tonic water has artificial sweeteners in.

Just an update to say that I'm currently enjoying a rock shandy, and it's perfect. Not too sweet, nicely dry and with an aromatic edge from the bitters. I got some Fever Tree ginger beer and will try that with lime tomorrow, too. Thanks for the suggestions!

Saw this late but for future reference. Bundaberg Ginger Beer (best GB ever!)
Bundaberg Lemon & Lime bitters
& bottle green cordials with lemonade (current favourite is the plum & apple or the seasonal spiced berry which can be served warm) are all quite good for adult non alcoholic drinks that aren't too sweet.
