Gender of baby

Hi,

I had my dating scan quite late at 15 weeks. We wanted to know the sex of the baby, but the baby wasn't shifting around. However the sonographer said that from what she could see it was a girl and this would be confirmed at the Anamoly scan for sure.

My Anamoly scan isn't until the 2nd week of Jan and I'm planning to hit the sales for shopping for baby clothes. Would I be ok to assume the baby is a girl and buy pinky items? :-)

I probably would but that's just me. It would probably be safer to wait. I had a private gender scan at 16 weeks and it was very clear what the gender was.

Well, I know quite a few people who were having girls until they came out with penis attached. My SIL had to take back almost everything as she was convinced by the scan it was a girl and then it was a boy baby! :-)

I don't know anyone who has been told they are having a boy who got it wrong though.

Chances are it is right but I'm only buying gender neutral baby items in the sales, I'm 28 weeks pregnant and pretty sure it's a boy! Just in case....

I would personally buy gender neutral stuff if you haven't yet had your anomaly scan yet as that's still very early days. But obviously it's up to you!

Why not buy gender neutral stuff? Given that a baby generally lives in a vest, a babygro and a cardigan for the first 6 months then I think you could kit yourself out with neutral basics in the sales. Maybe get a few obviously 'girl' things and keep the receipts? I didn't really dress dd in pink (unless it was bought for her) as I prefer other colours. Both dc tend to wear more greens, reds, yellows etc than anything else.

DS is 15mo btw and is currently wearing pink trousers and a navy top. They belonged to his older sister. I don't much worry about the colour of things! In fact he's worn most of his sister's old clothes with the obvious exception of skirts and dresses.

I didn't think differences became obvious until 16 weeks (can google for pics) so personally I wouldn't risk it - but there's a 50% chance you're having a girl Grin so it's up to you

I wouldn't until it was confirmed. We had a gender scan at 17 weeks that said baby was a girl. It was confirmed at our 20 week scan on Thursday though so I feel quite confident going and getting more 'girlie' items. As the first scan was private too we spent a lot of time with the sonographer as she showed us why she thought it was a female (the three white lines were very clear) and said that she had a 100% success rate of being correct lol. I still wanted to wait until the NHS sonographer confirmed it though. Wink

buy them and keep the receipts

GimmeIrnBru · 22/12/2012 13:02

I didn't buy anything until the last minute, tbh. Did not want to know. Personally, I would not buy anything if they're telling you it 'may' be a girl. If they'd said it's likely to be a boy you're more or less getting a boy. More likely to get the gender wrong if they've said it's a girl than the other way around.

pinkpeony4 · 22/12/2012 14:00

I was told I was having a boy at 14 & 15 weeks and then at 22 weeks it was 99% a girl which has now been confirmed with two more scans. I wouldn't buy anything gender specific yet.

Dogsmom · 22/12/2012 15:13

I know I would buy stuff but then I am impatient and there will be some bargains in the sales, just keep the receipts in case.

We paid and had a gender scan bang on 16 weeks and apparently it's the earliest they can tell with any degree of certainty, like another poster said as it was a specific gender scan she spent ages getting shots from below so she could get a good look at the genital area and said she checked 3/4 times before she announced the baby was a girl. It was confirmed at my anomaly scan.

GingerJulep · 22/12/2012 16:13

I've bought a few things but won't be finding out until it arrives (probably!)... it'll have a whole lifetime of gender stereotyping, I don't see I need to start before birth :-)

But then mine will find I disappear after a year and leave it with its SAHD so maybe a bit of conventional clothing would actually even things out!

DaveMccave · 23/12/2012 15:32

Because it's sale stuff and cheap I'd buy gender neutral AND some girly stuff. Just keep the receipts for the girly stuff, it's too good an opportunity to miss out on sale stuff but if you get some gender neutral too then you still haven't missed out if it's wrong.

Emsyboo · 23/12/2012 15:52

I agree buy gender neutral stuff my friend was told she was having a girl at 20 week scan but then had a boy also my other friend was told she was having a boy and had a girl but that was 7 years ago so think they are better now. Mostly with boys it is more obvious and they can point out obvious scrotum etc but 15 weeks seems early to be certain of a girl.
You can get some lovely neutral baby grows etc or dungarees, jeans and jumpers girls look lovely in most colours maybe just steer clear of pink till the 20 week Smile good luck x x
