I'd love a scan right now.

I suppose I'm just having a grumble really. I'm 6+5 by lmp but my tummy is big. Not gigantic, but bigger than it ought to be I think. I don't know if it's bloating or what.

I saw my GP last Wednesday (as in 12th Dec, not the one just gone) but so far have not heard from the hospital. My GP isn't great, and I'm not 100% confident that she'll have done what she is supposed to do wrt getting me a booking-in appt. But, I realise this is a busy time of year with winter bugs etc, and also that the mail system is overloaded, so I'm hoping it's all in the process. The thing is, I mc'd in June at 9 weeks, but only found out at 12 week scan.

I'd really just love to know everything's going ok, but I guess I'm not going to hear anything until after Christmas, am I?

At this stage it's all bloat; it's just an embryo at this point (doesn't become a fetus until 9 weeks) and is hidden away behind your pelvic bone. The womb doesn't rise up over the pubic bone until 12 weeks onwards, so right now that's pretty much all water retention and possibly gas due to reduced motility in the gut.

The NHS doesn't do early scans unless you start bleeding and passing clots. You won't get contacted for a booking-in appointment from the midwives until you're about 8 weeks, and the earliest you'd be booked for a routine scan would be 12 weeks for dating/nuchal scan.

You could pay to go private for an early viability scan from 7 weeks, but that will cost around £100.

Thank you. I knew that logically it would too soon to show yet but DP just made a helpful quip about twins. I am 35 and know that the likelihood of multiples increases as you get older, although. I'm not sure what constitutes "older" in this respect.

I'm 6+6 atm and very bloated (size 8, wearing size 12 bottoms), however when I went for my (private) scan today, they didn't go anywhere near my 'bump' as the embryo is still around the pubic bone!
I was quite surprised, as the size my stomach is I was expecting there to be a whole football team of 'em in there.

Could you go for a Private scan?
We live in London and it was £100-ish most places, but went out to the backwaters of Kent & it was only £50.

Hope you get your booking info through soon asap.

I was offered an early scan due to a mmc 3 years ago,

Also my date of last period didn't work out with when I got a BFP as would have been 10 weeks but scan showed 7 weeks with heartbeat.

Totally understand why you want one, ask mw or pay for one. It does make you feel better, then you worry more now it's real.

I'm also really bloated, had to pick clothes very carefully when seeing pils today as we are keeping it quiet just now.

definitely call your GP to see if she has completed your referral to hospital. I was told to call my GP if I hadn't heard anything in 2 weeks after my appt to be referred. I called yeaterday (as told) and she hasn't done the referral and isn't in the surgery again until Friday, by which point I will be 11+2 with a referral still to be done. Goodness only knows when I will get a scan-and I am really eager to see that everything is ok because we had a horrible pregnancy last time and also it feels so unreal!!

lyndie · 22/12/2012 07:39

There's nothing in your OP to suggest you needed an urgent booking appointment so likely your GP has done a routine referral which would mean a midwife appointment an scan around 12 weeks. Great you have so much faith in GPs! In many areas you self refer anyway and bypass the docs, can you do that instead? The bloating could be progesterone related and more about bowels than babies.

TiredofZombies · 22/12/2012 09:16

I asked my GP about the possibility of an early scan, she said she would write and ask but I may or may not get one. My faith in GPs is fine, it's my GP specifically who is useless.

You won't get an early scan just from your GP writing I'm afraid. You only get an early scan if you have a past history of mc (i.e. 3 or more mc - they won't do anything if it's less than 3) and are spotting/bleeding. Scans are actually very expensive and the NHS can't afford to do reassurance scans for no good reason.

For those relying on the GP to refer you - you don't have to bother with the GP at all. Look up your hospital's midwifery department online and just self-refer.

TiredofZombies · 22/12/2012 21:04

I'm not under any illusions, I know that my history does not necessitate an early scan, nor an urgent booking-in appointment. I realise I am very unlikely to get any of those. I'd just really like some reassurance. Like I said in my OP, it's a grumble, because I know I'll get naff all this side of Christmas. Probably a month after, actually.
