Booze survey: anyone else have a little tipple at Christmas?

Hi. I'm 24 weeks now and wondering if it's 'safe' to have a little drink at Christmas. Haven't touched a drop since I found out I was pregnant. I only really miss it when everyone else has a glass of something, like in a pub or at a dinner party etc. But with Christmas being in a few days I sort of want to feel like I'm not missing out, and would love a little glass of red wine on xmas day with my dinner, and then maybe something a week later on New Years' Eve - when I'm at a party. I'm thinking that will be within my 1-2 unit allowance each week. Is anyone else planning to do the same thing? I'm probably being paranoid as people keep telling me they drank a glass of wine every week throughout pregnancy, and the baby was fine, and here I am planning a couple of one-off drinks and stressing about it.

Anyone else having this dilemma?

I'm 39 weeks and had a very small Baileys on Thursday night and will probably have a weak bucks fizz and another Baileys at some point over the Christmas period.

FreeButtonChristmasTree · 22/12/2012 16:17

I have a small glass of wine once a week or so. So will do the same over Christmas. It's a risk i am completely relaxed about - althou i've lost the taste for alcohol somewhat so it's proper good expensive wine or nothing. Can't be doing with cheap plonk.

I am slightly concerned that i've completely lost my taste for champagne though - gutted. I LOVED a glass of bubbly before and now it tastes rank to me.

Otherwise, pomegranate juice, freshly squeezed lime and ginger ale is a nice festive drink that's not too sweet.

Mylittlepuds · 22/12/2012 18:57

I just can't see how a small glass of wine once a week or less is any more 'dangerous' than the other chemicals we bombard our bodies with in a daily basis. And what about diet? As a type one diabetic I know there are huge risks with uncontrolled blood sugars - so what about other factors like what women eat? Then of course there's stress which affects birth weight too. Unless we were pregnant in a test tube and given the perfect diet, kept away from stress etc etc then there's no perfect test to see how much tiny amounts of alcohol affects an unborn baby. Clearly regular drinking throughout a pregnancy is risky but for me, personally, to worry over one small glass less than once a week is daft.

Mylittlepuds · 22/12/2012 18:58

Unless of course you just don't like the stuff!

nannyl · 22/12/2012 19:21

I will be driving (5min journey) so wont touch a drop

Fairyloo · 22/12/2012 19:21

You do all know that the risk of problems is when you are dependently drinking, drinking and having withdrawal symptoms and not just 1-2 units weekly.

The only real concern is if you can't control your drinking.

Chill yummy mummy's to be and have a glass just don't get pissed!!!

SoYo · 22/12/2012 21:02

I'll be 30/40 on Christmas Day and forgoing my usual morning bucks fizz but having a small glass of red with dinner and a baileys in the evening for the present opening festivities. I love Christmas!!!!

helenlynn · 22/12/2012 22:13

I will have a glass and a half of something or other. I don't think I drank any alcohol during my first trimester, but I reckon eliminating every last drop for the entire pregnancy is over-the-top.

The other day I was forced to have a little try of the brandy that I was about to spike the mincemeat with. Just to make sure it was still suitable, having been open longer than I could remember. It was lovely.

rogersmellyonthetelly · 23/12/2012 16:39

I'll be having a small glass of baileys on Christmas eve as a treat. I don't drink other than baileys, and then once in a blue moon so I haven't missed it as such

Notmyidea · 23/12/2012 17:14

I'll have a glass of wine with my dinner. Doubt I'll stay awake to see in new year!

rrreow · 23/12/2012 18:18

I'm not too bothered about alcohol in the generic but I LOVE champagne. One glass (a champagne flute) is 2 units. So I'm having one for Christmas and one for NYE. I'm observing the NHS guidelines (no more than 1-2 units once a week) and did drink in my first trimester (am 15 weeks now). Last pregnancy I took the same approach but was totally off drink in 1st trimester because I couldn't stand it (it is weird because I had the WORST all-day-sickness this time, but did still fancy a drink every now and then).

StormyBrid · 23/12/2012 19:02

My dad's got me a few small bottles of Belgian fruit beer in for Christmas Day. Whether to drink them or not isn't really a dilemma for me though, because a) they're delicious and b) they're only four per cent. And I haven't been totally abstaining anyway - been having one or two pints once or twice a month throughout. To be honest pregnancy's been a great excuse to buy really expensive beer - if I can't drink much then I might as well be drinking something really tasty.

MyLittleAprilSunshine · 24/12/2012 16:27

I may have a small spritza tomorrow and half a glass of champagne on NYE. I don't miss drinking to be honest with you. I am 25 weeks.

MyLittleAprilSunshine · 24/12/2012 16:28

Oh and had schloer the other day, might have some more!!!

WingDefence · 24/12/2012 16:36

I'm 25 weeks and will be having a glass of red with Christmas lunch tomorrow but NYE may remain 100% sober as we haven't got any plans as yet so it could be an early night anyway!

worsestershiresauce · 24/12/2012 16:54

I won't, as I'm not that bothered about alcohol, but I have to confess that I had several glasses of wine a week before I realised I was pregnant, and the first 12 weeks is supposed to be the absolute no no period for drinking. The baby is depressingly large and kicks like a mule, so I'm fairly sure it had no detrimental effect.

babyperks · 24/12/2012 16:56

I won't be. Really don't see the point. Can't understand how people can be "comfortable with the risks". Just doesn't make sense to me. I'm definitely going to miss my glass of wine with my dinner this year, but not enough to even contemplate having any. Just don't see the point, and couldn't live with the guilt.
Obviously just my opinion, everyone is free to do as they please Smile
Merry Christmas!

FirstPersonPlural · 24/12/2012 17:27

I'm 34 weeks and have a couple of glasses of very good red wine or Guinness every week. Absolutely no interest in spirits or champagne, though, and couldn't even take more than 2 sips of the white wine FIL served with our lunch today. So will probably enjoy a Guinness during our holiday meal tomorrow. High in iron and other mineral content!
Mmmmmmm, Guinness... Grin

CuriouslyChristmassyColaHam · 24/12/2012 17:38

Won't be having any. I don't drink any alcohol during pregnancy. This is due to there being alcoholics on both sides of our family and because I know if anything went wrong I would blame myself.

BuntysFestiveCollocks · 24/12/2012 18:14

I'm 39+4 tomorrow, and I plan on having a glass of prosecco and a very small glass of red with my dinner. Yum.

maximusminimus · 24/12/2012 18:36

Totally agree Fairy - very well put.

I shall be enjoying a nice ice-cold glass of champagne on both Christmas Day and NYE :)

Mylittlepuds · 24/12/2012 19:01

Baby perks. There are no risks in one small glass of wine less than once a week - and certainly not one on Christmas Day/special occasion.

babyperks · 24/12/2012 19:28

Mylittlepuds: I'm not saying there is a risk. Just personally I couldn't do it.
Just wondering though, how many of you are willing to tuck into a nice prawn cocktail, or pate on toast? Or are these things a complete 'no no' compared to alcohol?!

BoomBoomBoom · 24/12/2012 19:34

I was going to have a glass of wine with my dinner tomorrow but I have found a bottle of lilt which is my craving so I'm going to have that instead in a wine glass.

Mylittlepuds · 24/12/2012 19:50

But you did - and what would you be guilty for?! Prawn cocktail is absolutely fine as long as prawns aren't raw. I eat them daily. Pâté I wouldn't have even though I'd love to - very small risk of listeria.
