Baby moving about A LOT - indication of anything?

Hi - I am 32 weeks pregnant and have noticed in the last week or so the baby is moving about in there an awful lot - tonnes! i dont want to use the word violent - but he's kicking and punching so much and so regularly it is really quite painful - just wondering if this is an indication of anything?

ps. glad he's healthy and not complaining at all - was more just curious if it might be a sign of anything - good or bad.

Justmeandthebump · 19/12/2012 06:47

You will have a crazy toddler.

saintlyjimjams · 19/12/2012 06:53

I think it's mainly a problem if it's followed by a very quiet spell, but as always do check if you are concerned - so easy for a midwife to listen to the heartbeat. It probably just means there's a lot of room. If you have an appointment soon or an easy way to chat to a midwife I would though.

FWIW my third was very very wriggly, rarely still. He's 8 next month and exactly the same. I was watching him yesterday and he never just Walsh somewhere, he hops, skips and jumps around in circles. Wriggles on a lap as well. I tell him he was the same in my tummy.

It could be a diet thing - babies can get sugar highs too! Or it could just be personality - maybe you've got an Olympic gymnast or karate kid on the way! Wink

Though if it's unusual , keep an eye. Have you been eating lots of sugary food/caffeine? That sort of stuff affected dd2

Justmeandthebump · 19/12/2012 08:49

no not at all. cant eat barely anything because of heartburn. i am living on beans on toast, eggs on toast or peanut butter on toast. everything else makes me ill.

Well, mine is like that (I think I quite alarmed the poor man sitting next to me at a talk the other week -- it looked like I'd swallowed a bucket of snakes). I can't pretend to have been off sugar and caffeine though! I think some babies are just like that and it's probably more reassuring than the alternative. Maybe some of them find it very very exciting to discover they have 'legs' and 'arms' to wave about. Is yours also head-butting you in the pelvis at regular intervals? Mine is...painful...

Polyethyl · 19/12/2012 09:34

Oh good. Glad I'm not the only one experiencing violent, continual kicking. My husband is hoping she will grow up to be a can can dancer!

Phineyj · 19/12/2012 09:40

I'm thinking rugby player or rower, as DH was both...he'll be driving her around though, I could care less about sport! He is also a very keen cyclist so it may be I shouldn't have watched quite so many of those fabulous GB women cyclists winning things this summer looks forward to lots of lovely free weekend time in a decade or two while other family members get muddy/wet/sweaty Or possibly football or tennis. She does a thing where she does rhythmic punches with one hand where it's like a child kicking a can against a wall...only it's my stomach wall. Hmm one can enrol them in martial arts at quite a young age, right?

My DD was very much like that, and she was the same when she was born, rolling, crawling and walking early, I think she just likes to be on the go. She's a very very active 15 month old now!

We went to see Skyfall last night and it took me a while to realise that the loud bangs were driving the baby crazy.. Poor little thing. At least we know it can hear!

My dd1 was like this. I would wake in the night in pain because she had just kicked/punched/elbowed an organ of mine

She is now a healthy 4.5 year old who has always been very bright and very very active
Have fun with yours Wink

rogersmellyonthetelly · 19/12/2012 23:40

My dd was like this, I used to call her ninja baby. Was quite a relief to have her out. I hate to say it but she is just the same now, age 6 she is only still/quiet when she is asleep, and she was very very hyper as a toddler, rarely slept and 100 miles an hour at everything she did.

Pochemuchka · 20/12/2012 00:14

DS was like this too which was a bit of a shock since DD was quite sedate.
He rolled at 2 weeks old and hasn't let up since!
He's now 21 months and this evening he laid out some toys in the middle of the lounge for the sole purpose of having something to run around in circles Hmm for about 20 minutes!
He's adorable though!
