Products/Gifts for the baby

Hi all,

As its our 1st baby, alot of family are offering/wanting to buy us things. My mum is buying my cot (I don't want a cot bed), my sibling is buying my travel system (car seat and pushchair), another sibling is buying the baby bath, and moses basket is sorted too. Mother in law has now said she'd like to buy the cot, and I'm just wondering what else I will need for the baby so that I can offer to her to to buy. I'm not really sure what products I will need besides a bouncer (electric one possibly?) and a baby monitor? (I don't have huge amounts of space!) Is there anything else that would be nice for the baby to have in the 1st two years of life that cost more than £30? Or even over a £100? I was thinking of an Ergo carrier but I'm not sure if I/hubby will end up using it?

Highchair?
I like having a sling for dd but if you want one might be worth trying a few at a sling library or whatever before you commit to buying one.

We have an ergo carrier and it's great.
Second the vote for a high chair.

rainand · 17/12/2012 11:34

Thanks, great idea about the high chair, had completely skipped my mind!

A swing, mine liked them more than bouncers, and a JUMPEROO but they are huge and its early and you would have to store it - but the babies love them.

Second hand is better. I have never used our baby monitor but we co-sleep.

Slings I agree you need to try out, same with travel system tbh.

poocatcherchampion · 17/12/2012 11:37

Monitor is a good idea. Get one of the video ones, that's what I'd like!!

kittenskittenskittens · 17/12/2012 14:20

I agree with the monitor, personally I think one of the best high chairs is the simple one from ikea which is only £15, plus you won't need that till bubs is 5/6 months, bumbos are also good but that's the kind of thing I'd get second hand

BikeRunSki · 17/12/2012 14:31

Don't spend loads on a highchair, even if someone else is buying
The Ikea Antilop is the best designed highchair in the world. If you are not near an Ikea, there's always someone selling them new on eBay.

I'd second a Jumperoo.

When is baby due? How about a good fleece /waterproof/ both suit for when its 12-18months or 18-24 months according to season. I had 2 autumn babies, who both had fleece ones their first winter, waterproof ones in the summer and fleece lined waterproof ones in their second winter. All were invaluable. Bushbaby and Jojomamanbebe ones are excellent.

An "IOU your first pair of shoes" voucher?

londonlivvy · 17/12/2012 15:23

Baby monitor, definitely. We bought the angelcare one with sensor pad for reassurance.

You might also want an electric breast pump and they are expensive. If you're breastfeeding, expressing is a great way of getting more sleep or being able to go out occasionally. I express and go to bed at 9pm and my OH does a feed at 10pm then comes to bed. I then do 3am etc, but means I sleep two hours more. Lots of people also seem to find expressing useful if you get engorgement, oversupply, cracked nipples etc.

rainand · 18/12/2012 01:21

Thanks for the tip on the high chair from eBay and the electric pump, which sounds like a great idea! Thanks!

Baby Bjorn bouncy chairs are going on for £100 but well worth the investment. They outlast all the other baby bouncers - dd1 was still using hers occasionally aged 2

Pitmountainpony · 18/12/2012 07:13

A baby swing will get you time but I would second hand it.
Ergo is great from 4 months but only if you will wear baby.

smileyhappymummy · 18/12/2012 08:10

If you want an electric breast pump I've got the ameda lactaline which I like - currently there's a code for £40 off on amaxon family which makes it only 59.99 - still a lit of money but less!
Agree tht the antilop high chair is fab.

Splatt34 · 18/12/2012 08:28

how lucky touch are to have such a generous family. you don't really know what else you'll need until it happens. I git a second hand swing but DD hated it so bought a baby bjorn bouncer at 2 months. had a manual breast pump but ended up hiring electric. spent £80 on a highchair but idea one at mum's is better.

Why not thank MIL but suggest once DC is here you'll know what else you'll need and maybe ahead could buy it you then.

soapnuts · 18/12/2012 08:30

My MIL bought us our ergo - still the best baby present I got and about to do a second round with DC2! You can use them before 4 months by the way - you just need an infant insert. Personally I'd get that over the baby swing thing any day - DS1 would never sit in anything so would have been a waste of money for me.... having said that you probably don't know what you need until you have the baby! What is baby going to sleep in first? maybe she could get the moses basket, bed-side crib if it's not going to go straight into the cot?
