So I am 35 weeks pregnant with DD2. I have found it very difficult being pregnant this time, managing a demanding job and DD1, who is 2 and 4/5 months.

I have had really bad heart burn this time and since yesterday evening it has just been constant and really sore and painful. I have tried everything, milk, gavascon, I have tablets from the doctors to take twice a day, I've eatem, not eaten, propped myself up all night on pillows, but nothing is stopping it and it is horrid...anyone offer any suggestions for relief please????!!!

No, sorry but you are not alone. I spent all night last night vomiting with the pain of the heartburn.

There are a couple of different types of tablets they can give you at the doctors, so if the ones you're having aren't doing anything then go back. Peppermint tea might also be helpful for you?

No helpful advice, sorry, but just wanted to commiserate. I suffered terrible heartburn throughout my pregnancy and it made life miserable at times. Milk and gaviscon helped but didn't eradicate it and night-times were awful. I feel your pain. Unless you've had it a long time, people don't understand how debilitating and misery-making it can be. I sympathise hugely.

On the plus side, it will vanish very quickly in a few weeks time (if not before), and the pleasure you get from that will make you feel amazing, I promise. I was so enjoying being heartburn free I forgot to be knackered, irritable new mum. Grin

Congratulations on your pregnancy and good luck for labour. Smile

Thanks for the sympathy, I am going to the doctors this afternoon, to see if they can change the medication I am on to help. I think that DD is getting right up and under my ribs, so that is what is making it so bad...just needed a moan and sympathy, as it really hurts! Thanks!!

Hi Ghostie,

Again no magical cures, I just want to sympathise. I was a gaviscon junkie when I was pregnant with my son, it was horrible. We had bottles of the stuff and tablets all over the place, and I drank lots of milk, and while I might get the odd 10 minutes of relief, I found the only cure was labour! Sorry you're suffering and hope you get some good advice/medication from your GP.

Mine ramped up at this point too, with this pg (37 weeks now) and DS1. Both times docs prescribed maalox. It worked well with DS1 not so well now but is minimising the effects.

Don't mean to sound alarmist but I seem to recall a thread sometime back - where OP had dreadful heartburn and it was pointed out that this could be a symptom of pre-eclampsia. The Op was very poorly indeed but it had a happy outcome due to her seeking help. Worth checking with GP or MW just to be sure....

Know how you feel. Only 8+5 but heartburn and acid reflux is already killing me too. Have been googling like mad and came across an article suggesting ripe bananas as a cure for heartburn. Trying one now!! Fingers crossed!

stephrick · 14/12/2012 21:16

I had really bad heartburn with DD, she was very hairy, passed out a couple of times with it too.

thedicewoman · 14/12/2012 21:21

omeprazole worked for me, you can get it onprescription

BonzoDooDah · 14/12/2012 21:22

I had utterly horrendous heartburn in my last month of pregnancy with DD and DS. I completely sympathise. Nothing seemed to touch it - I was eating packets of heartburn tablets and swigging gaviscon from the bottle.

Then my doctor prescribed Gaviscon Advance (the strong stuff) - a litre at a time. I drank that out of the bottle [slattern] and it really really helped. Try that. You can buy smaller bottles at the chemist (and aniseed instead of all that mint) but it costs a bomb. But a small botlte will last you 'til you see the Dr and then the prescription is free.
Good luck. It does go away immediately the baby is born (hurrah!).

BonzoDooDah · 14/12/2012 21:22

Oh and sometimes I mixed some bicarb of soda with water (a teaspoon) and drank that. It gave some relief but not as long lasting as the Gaviscon advance.

Lostbobbles · 14/12/2012 22:22

I was prescribed omeprazole last week after suffering horrendous hb for months and it's amazing no heartburn or reflux at all.

Reebok · 14/12/2012 23:06

Ok bananas don't work but I had an ice lolly to ease my nausea and the burning in my chest has eased slightly so it may be worth a shot!!
