Fruity warning

I've not had much in the way of advice just yet. Only hit 20 week mark the other day, so perhaps the floodgates will open soon. Anyway I had purchased a large box of satsumas for the office to consume amidst the sea of chocs and mince pies during the festive period. They've been out for a day or so and a colleague saw the box and saw me eating one, and then proceeded to tell me that I should not be eating satsumas......because.....wait for it....they are imported from China. I said surely it didn't matter because they are a fruit with a peel and also I LIKE THEM. She was convinced they were full of nasty Chinese pesticides and bad for me. I have now been eating them in secret. So have I missed something......has there been a recent health warning against Chinese fruit and veg? If so what to Chinese pregnant women eat? I'm also going for a Chinese on Saturday - shall I cancel Xmas Hmm

Personally I think it's a load of rubbish. The midwife would mention it surely if it was an issue?
I also bought a big box and very much enjoying working my way through.
Also good for the pregnancy related constipation sorry tmi

thats all Ive been able to keep down from 6wks to the 14wks I am now, dont worry x

RightUpMyRue · 14/12/2012 16:47

Utter crap.

Dandelion75 · 14/12/2012 17:59

Don't you just love it when random people kindly share their ill-informed rubbish about what you can and can't eat it pregnancy. I find it incredibly helpfulXmas Hmm

Ignore this rubbish. In fact I would perch myself on the end of their desk and chat to them while eating a satsuma. In fact 3 satsumas from China. And then i would orderva chow mein for delivery to the office. While wearing one of these Grin

I'd round it off by making up some similarly spurious food scare about the next thing I saw them eating....."what's that you're eating? Quavers? Haven't you heard? The fine cheesy dust they are coated in contains small traces of arsenic!"

Sorry. I'm beginning to get pissed off with the world telling me what I can and cannot eat. Think I'm hiding it well though Grin

Snowflakepie · 14/12/2012 18:03

I've never heard that one, enjoy the fruit if that's what you want! Some people just love to poke their noses in really.

Overreactionoftheweek · 14/12/2012 18:06

Ah, I thought this was going to be about eating too much fruit.

Apparently all the sugar in fruit can lead to giant babies so don't eat it all day every day thinking you're being healthy!

But I think chinese fruit is safe Xmas Wink

Cheffie100 · 14/12/2012 18:23

What a pile of rubbish. She obviously knows all about the the European Directive on Pestcide levels

LittlemissChristmas · 14/12/2012 19:01

Eek didn't know that about the big babies all I'm eating at the min is fruit!!

berri · 14/12/2012 19:36

Reminds me of my last pregnancy where I was carrying a bowl of potato and leek soup to the checkout to pay at the work canteen, and a colleague said 'are you sure you should you be eating that?' so I said 'er....what's in it that could be bad?" and he said...

'Oh I don't know I just thought I should check'.

People are full of useful advice for pregnant women!!

Also if you try to avoid touching anything imported from China it might turn out to be a bit tricky Grin

soapnuts · 14/12/2012 22:00

Oh for goodness sake! there have been issues with some food in China (having lived there 5 years, believe me I know!) but there is very very little chance that tainted food would make it through into Europe because they have such strict regulations here. Also, you're peeling the fruit so most yuckiness is going to be discarded that way.

Ignore stupid comments - it drives me crazy that we become public property when we're pregnant - yet another reason to be looking forward to my baby being born!! (that and pate and brie..... droooool!)
