Unhappy about new D&C news

Hi Im currently 6 months pregnant and very excited about it! However last year I had a MMC at 11 weeks and had a D/C shortly afterwards. Ive just seen on 'The Wright Stuff' this morning a report by NICE says that hospitals should NOT do any d/c's before 13 weeks as it is not reliable if the scanner says they can't see a heartbeat because they are too tiny and that some babies are infact still alive. I'm absolutely horrified and so upset. Now can't stop thinking about it. What if they were wrong? What if I'd just waited for things to happen naturally. Is anyone else thinking this?

(Sorry, did post this not long ago but wrong title)

I thought there were NICE guidelines that stated that a patient needs scanning twice to confirm before any action is taken?

Matthew Wright is an irresponsible buffoon and I would really not listen to anything he spouts

Please do not be guilt-tripping yourself here, at 11 weeks a heartbeat would have been really obvious to see, you have done thing wrong x

I agree with Fooffighter I had a scan at 10 weeks heartbeat for DC1 was clear to see, this pregnancy could even hear heartbeat at 11 weeks with a doppler if they couldn't find it as sad as it is it was a miscarriage. I am so sorry for your previous loss and don't feel any worse because the media are spouting something new and scaring or guilt tripping people.
Congrats on your pregnancy try to focus on this baby you do not need any additional stress or guilt at this time. x

Hi there

I hope I can reassure you , I've just had a look through the new guidelines and they don't say that.

If a foetus is seen without a HB what to do next depends on the size of the foetus. If it is small ie less than 7mm they recommend repeat scanning after a minimum of a week, as there is a chance as there is a chance that the scan was too early to see a HB.

If the foetus is larger (and so the pregnancy more advanced) they recommend either getting a second opinion, or repeating the scan after an interval. When I had my MC the ultra sonographer got another technician to confirm the loss. I suspect this may have happened with you.

Modern ultrasound machines are very sensitive and it is highly unlikely that they will miss a heartbeat once the baby is above a certain size.

Please try not to worry too much. If you are really concerned you might find it helpful to go through your notes and scan results with your medical team.

Wish you all the best for this pregnancy

Exactly what the other ladies have said

I had an early scan in this pregnancy after bleeding and at 8 weeks the heartbeat was clear as day

Don't stress yourself about this and concentrate on focusing on the positives x

Just want to add, with this pregnancy I had a scan at 6 weeks and the HB was clear and so really, really unlikely that they missed one at 11 weeks.

Bloody Matthew Wright!

Thankyou ladies, I feel much better now. It was such a knee-jerk reaction I didnt even think of checking up on the guidelines myself. You'd think i'd have learnt by now not to believe everything I hear on T.V!
