Really fancied a prawns cocktail.. I usually use cooked frozen prawns just from Asda or something.. can I still eat this while pregnant?

The guidelines on what to avoid ^

Best to avoid

Startail · 10/12/2012 13:10

I always do, but cooked myself or from M&S or a Chinese that's never made me ill.

The only time I've had food poisoning was prawn soup on holiday. So I avoid prawns from untested sources.

maximusminimus · 10/12/2012 13:34

Yes, totally fine, provided they've been properly cooked first. Senorita's wrong, unless you're talking about raw prawns (or obviously prawns which have been sitting out for ages on a dodgy buffet - but then it's not just prawns you need to worry about, it's everything!).

there is no reason why you cant eat cooked prawns

Salukigirl · 10/12/2012 17:58

Just to add to this that my DH had food poisoning from prawns from the local chinese takeaway.

Just about everything can give you food poisoning (chicken, rice, poorly washed salad etc) but nobody suggests not eating all of that stuff.

You're safe to eat cooked prawns I think (and I have), but it's an individual choice as to whether you want to, as with all the food/drink guidance.

nannyl · 11/12/2012 11:01

if you read the NHS guidelines they do not say you cant eat cooked prawns

it is not recommended that you dont eat cooked prawns, its simply fine.

and any food at all can make you ill

Brugmansia · 11/12/2012 12:52

I don't understand where these queries about eating prawns come from. I'm 33 weeks now and have had people suggest to me in person I shouldn't be eating prawns and the question regularly pops up here. As said above, there's nothing in the nhs guidelines about this and I can't work out what people think may be wrong with them. It just seems to be one of those pregnancy myths that gets perpetuated all the time.

weeblueberry · 11/12/2012 13:07

I agree - I've been eating prawns the whole time. Not in massive quantities but I'm definitely not avoiding them.

I suspect it's due to the potential for bacteria which can make you ill, as with most shellfish.

BikeRunSki · 11/12/2012 13:09

I ate almost nothing but prawn sandwhiches for a few weeks in my second pg.

redwellybluewelly · 11/12/2012 13:20

There was a period a while back where shellfish easily deemed unsuitable in pg.

I don't eat pate or unpasteuriseditems but I eat and enjoy shellfish and sushi and will continued to do so. O also eat runny eggs a bit less runny than usual and I cook my steak more than I usually would. But iit's about what you are comfortable with.
