Question for Mears.............

.............and anyone else who knows of course.

I am 13+6 and just wondered what to do regarding my Navel Bar.

My midwife has seen it and the sonographers at the hospital have seen it but not mentioned anything.

Should i take it out or is it alright to leave in? ? ? Have only really heard what friends have done but it just seemed to be personal choice over what's right or wrong.

Thanks - SC x

I don't imagine it should cause too many problems at the moment, but it might get a little uncomfortable when you get bigger! You'd probably be asked to remove it if it got in the way of any scans, and if you ended up needing an emergency section- it shouldn't be anywhere near the cut, but people going for an operation are asked to remove jewellery such as earrings, so they don't accidentally get snagged. They can harbour germs as well....

SC - I wore mine until I was 25 weeks pg with DS. After this it was just too uncomfortable. I put it in twice a day for a minute or too for the rest of my pregnancy to keep the piercing open and as soon as DS was born popped it back in.

HTH

That sounds like a good idea Dejags!

Tell you what, since being pregnant i have turned totally thick! ! ! I would usually think of things like that but it didn't even enter my head.

Good job i have mumsnet to help me along

I was told it's good to take them out before you get too big as the holes tend to stretch out with the belly only don't shrink back, afterwards.

emmatmg · 09/01/2004 12:43

Just a note SP.........the brain doesn't get better after you've had the baby.

I thought 'what the bloody hell is a navel bar, I didn't have one in any of my pregenancies'
I thought you were talking about the linea negra(sp?) and were giving it a new name!

I am living proof that having children makes you as thick as pig-sh*t.....or maybe I'm the only one!

No doubt i will be joining you once baby arrive emma - At least it will give DP something to laugh about

I think really it is a personal choice SC. If it is comfortable you could leave it but there is the stretcing issie. I have seen lots of women come in with rings - it that an alternative to a bar? Technically is that the same thing?
If you did need C/S fpr any reason it would need to be removed to make sure that it can be easily removed.
A couple of months ago I was asked to remove a clitoral stud as a lady approached the second stage of labour - would have been better if she had done that herself at home. Her DP didn't want to do it and thw midwife looking after couldn't bring herself to do it lol

morocco · 09/01/2004 13:50

the things your job involves mears!
I took mine out after about 5 months but the hole (well scar) is still quite visible - maybe I took it out too late or it would have been like that anyway? Anyhow, depressing but true, the last thing I ever want to do again is draw attention to my stomach so it stayed out after that.

katierocket · 09/01/2004 13:52

eeewwww...mears - that's made me go a bit squeamish

SpringChicken · 09/01/2004 13:57

That is horrible Mears - glad to say i wont be surprising my midwife with one of those

Think i will probably take it out soon then and just put it in every so often to keep the whole open.
I don't have the best tummy in the world but it's more a case of how much it hurt having it done that i want to keep it in rather than get it repierced IF my stomach ever reaching a reasonable look again.

Thanks for your answers.

rofl emmatmg- exactly what i thought!

Dinny · 10/01/2004 00:18

SpringChicken, you can get this plastic little tube thing to put inside hole to keep it open - just ask at a body piecer's. Was going to put one in but in the end just let it heal up - annoyingly. Miss my little blue stone down there (tummy, not any further down, ooh er)

Hi Springchicken,
If you do a search on the internet i know that you can now buy pregnancy bars quite cheap. Also if it helps i bought a snake shaped ring and had to take it out during the day, but left it in all night with no probs.Forgot to take it out when i went into labour though and it caused no problems !
