Measuring bump

I'm going to buy a soft measuring tape so I can start measuring my developing bump, maybe once a week or when I remember
I know it's a stupid question but where would be the best place to measure? I was thinking by my belly button but is that too high?

I read somewhere that it was pointless and unreliable. May I ask why you want to do this? (not being judgemental)

The NHS relies on tape measures to screen most low-risk women in the final third of pregnancy, which campaigners said was ?extraordinary in the 21st century? This is from The Times's article titled Chaotic NHS fails to prevent hundreds of stillbirths dated from 27/11.
That's where I read it from. FWIW, I was told DS would be pretty big, he was very normal.

Just curious really, a bit of harmless fun. I've had 3 mc's so now I'm in the 2nd trimester I'm fascinated to see how my body may change. Thought it may be fun for DH and I to do together?

As long as you don't get to worried about what you measure, it should be good fun indeed! Good luck with your pregnancy.

It was not clear, it pointed out inconsistencies in measuring bumps and suggested that the results should be plotted on a graph.

That's interesting.
I didn't realised midwifes measured so might not bother. Where do they measure?

From pelvic bone to under your ribs I think OP! They will measure at all your appointments from now on so you probably don't need to bother!

They measure from 25 weeks. You measure from your pelvic bone to the top of your uterus. You find the bit where it goes soft again, Usually below your belly button at this point. You do it while lying down.

DialMforMummy · 08/12/2012 21:34

IIRC, from the top of the bump(ish) to the top of your pubic bone(ish). In my case, they would have measured the extend of my cake consumption. They thought Ds was going to be big, he was not, it's just that a very nice tearoom with awesome cakes opened close to where I live. Grin

You will be able to tell from your clothes when you cant fit into them anymore!

Miswives measure from the bottom of your boobs..central chest to the very bottom of your bump, almost on your pubic bone.

Unreliable and not accurate as there are so many influencing factors (fluid levels/constipation etc)

Love it dialM
I will be the same over Christmas!!
