Very thin watery discharge?

Sorry for the TMI but today I've had some very thin, water like discharge that I haven't noticed before. Its pretty clear but doesn't smell or anything. I have had discharge during this pregnancy but just the normal stuff I used to experience pre menstrual.

I'm 18+2. Is this normal? I'm just getting a bit worried because I've read about people leaking amniotic fluid etc..

From what I remember my discharge was like that the whole of my 2nd & 3rd trimesters. It's normal x

It could be amniotic fluid. Depending on the amount of it, would depend whether I'd be concerned at all or not. I've had 'damp' underwear from discharge in my pregnancy nearly from the start, but nothing gushing or anything like that.

When in doubt, ask your midwife.

Rhubarb78 · 06/12/2012 21:39

I remember having that in my last pregnancy, it sounds pretty normal to me, I had the same worries though but obviously it was nothing. I am not sure how true this is but i was told that when your waters go they keep going so if the discharge comes and goes then its prob not your waters. If you are really worried though you can always call your midwife.

There wasn't that much tbh...just a little in my underwear then a little when I wiped. Not enough to be uncomfortable or anything... Might give the midwife a call tomorrow but difficult to do as she's only in the clinic the same hours I work. Sad

Oh dear. Maybe see if you can get 5 minutes break from work during the day at some time. Some midwives work really unsociable hours.

weeblueberry · 06/12/2012 21:57

Will do. What do they do if it is amniotic fluid? Is there anything they can do or?

weeblieberry I leaked amniotic fluid from 25 weeks. Go to your midwife she will probably tell you it's just normal discharge and it may well be but if it happens again make sure you get a dr to have a look. My midwife old me the first time it was normal but it happened again and I went to hospital and they did an internal and yes I was leaking.
If you are leaking it has lots of implications. They call it pprom. At its worst you can go into early labour. At its best you will be monitored twice a week from now on and they will probably want to induce you at 38 weeks. I leaked at 25 weeks and made it to 36 weeks with no problems. The main worry is infection as water can get out so infection can get in. Another problem is lung development if there is not enough fluid for baby to swallow etc. please do go and get checked, people think it doesn't happen but it does and it can be very serious.
I do hope though that it is just normal discharge.

Oh also meant to put it doesn't have to be a gush to be waters going. Mine was a slow leak so a little trickle every now and then not even every day. Sometimes also it can reseal but this is very rare.

weeblueberry · 07/12/2012 09:30

Thank you Smallgreenone. Frustratingly I've come out without my notes today so can't call the midwife as I don't have her number.

There didn't seem to be any discharge/fluid overnight but when I've come into work there seems to be a little amount. Its very difficult to tell what it is really - am assuming at this very early stage that it's just discharge but I admit I do feel a little...'moist' (sorry for the really gross word!!) down there which is how I normally felt right before a period before I got pregnant. And that was always just discharge.

Trying to keep my hopes up but hope it will all be okay until at least Monday when I can get in touch with the midwife.

Well I just did the sniff test (delightful it was...) and it definitely smelled of ammonia. I'm going to keep an eye on it over the weekend but it looks like I'm just leaking wee.

Lovely. Wink

Better than amniotic fluid at your gestation though Grin

weeblueberry · 07/12/2012 15:26

Absolutely!!

I did call the EPU this afternoon to quickly discuss it with a midwife as mine wasn't available. The triage midwife was great and agreed that she wouldn't be concerned at this point. She said if it changes in any way (odour, volume, consistency etc) to give them a quick call and I'm able to go to their drop in clinic. I'm going to monitor it over the weekend but have hit a snag - the panty liner I'm using is white so if the fluid on it is clear I can't see it lol...

I had that trouble too!!! Annoying isn't it!! You'll know if its wee as it will smell and to be honest if you're concerned it might be amniotic fluid then please go and get it checked as better be safe than sorry. I ummed and ahed when it happened to me and the midwife said the same as yours and I nearly didnt bother calling back as thought I was being paranoid. Turns out I wasn't and I'm so glad I got it checked or I might not be sitting here with my little boy today.

weeblueberry · 07/12/2012 21:28

Thanks hon. I've given the panty liner a sniff (truly the highlight of my day..) and it definitely smells like wee. And when I saw it against the white liner it actually did look a little off white...

But I do really appreciate your response. I feel okay and have a scan booked for a week and a half anyway. I'll monitor it but if I feel anything changes I'll definitely pop into the drop in. Smile
