Cord Blood Donation

I was wondering if you knew about donating your Umbilical Cord after you've given birth to your beautiful baby/ies?

The cord contains so many stem cells within the blood which they can be used to treat patients who are suffering from life threatening diseases including little babies that are premature.

It can help:
Malignancies - a cancer of the blood, e.g. Leukaemia, lymphoma
Bone marrow failure - when bone marrow doesn't produce the cells it should
Haemoglobinopathies - a blood disorder e.g. Sickle cell anaemia, thalassaemia
Immunodeficiencies - when the immune system doesn't work properly
Metabolic disorders - which affect the breakdown of waste products in the body.

Despite this it's only avaliable in 6 hospitals nationwide, so please check if yours is one of them and register now if you feel you'd like to do this.

Thank you :D

Shame it's not available elsewhere as it's something it'd very happily donate.

Hemlet · 07/12/2012 21:50

A huge shame it's not available in more places :-(

I did this - it was very straightforward. And much much easier than giving your own blood!

Lora1982 · 08/12/2012 00:14

Its offered at mine and ive agreed to it. Ive seen some people saying no as they clamp it off while its still pumping into the baby and their theory is that baby must need whats going in. I dont know how it works though thats just heresay that ive read. Like i said though im all signed up.

ZuleikaD · 08/12/2012 07:00

I don't do it because that's blood that should be circulating around my baby.

Shenanagins · 08/12/2012 08:02

Our hospital doesn't do this. looked into whether i could do this privately the last time but they only do it to preserve if i needed it in the future which is not what i wanted.

SucksToBeMe · 08/12/2012 08:06

I would do it at the drop of a hat. I don't think my hospital does it,as it wasn't mentioned at birth of DS. I can't click on the link as I'm on my phone. Was Frimley Park,Surrey on it?

SucksToBeMe · 08/12/2012 08:07

That last sentence went a bit crazy, I'm site you know what I mean!

I'm petitioning the government to roll out cord blood donation, I was hoping you would sign it: bit.ly/19BII0S

I did it with my other pregnancies and will be doing it again this time around. If I can help other people, why not?
