I'm currently 27+6 with DC2 and the past few days I haven't been able to breath through my nose at night at all. In the morning it is always full of blood and I feel like I've been punched in the face.
I know this is common in pregnancy with blood vessels expanding (or something Confused ) but does anyone know if there is anything I can do about it?

I'd like to know too, I'm getting awful pressure headaches from having a blocked nose all the time. Went to the doctors and nurse gave me a prescription for amoxicillin saying I might have a virus and suggested a saline nasal spray for congestion, even though I stressed to her that I'm pregnant and don't have snot, just pressure! Didn't want to spell out to her what I'd read online about increased blood flow etc but I always kick myself afterwards for not being more pushy :(

Will bring it up with my midwife when I see her next week though as saline spray didn't do anything and nurse said amoxicillin might not even work!

Hope you find something as doesn't sound fun at all x

Saline spray to clear your nose (Sterimar is good). If it's really bad, get GP to prescribe a steroid nasal spray. That's why I use to keep the awful headaches at bay.

Thanks ladies, I'll see if I can get some saline today even if it cools the inside my nose that'll be helpful. Looks like a trip to the doctors.
lauraellajane it'd be interesting to hear what your midwife says.

I'm. 37+ weeks and have had this for months. Sometimes having an extra pillow helps. I use Vicks when it wakes me in the night and keep a toilet roll by my bed to save money on tissues. And have a hot shower every morning.

But it's all management and no change sadly. The inside of my nose is scabby ad every nose blow is bloody. Every sympathy with you, but I think it's a symptom you just have to tough out.

FWIW, this disappeared as soon as I had my first child. And I seemed to get respite from Hayfever for most of the rest of that summer too.

I sleep with a humidifier in the room. Saline spray helps, and there's a sesame oil nasal spray available here that also helps. But it is a right royal pain in the nose!

Menthol crystals are helping me but now I know why I keep ending up with a red tissue when I blow my nose in the morning!

TimeyWimeyStuff · 02/12/2012 14:49

Just a warning re anything menthol. While it works to unblock noses temporarily, it's actually a counter irritant, so could make things worse in the long run, perhaps by causing more bleeding etc. I know this because of a throat problem I had. I was sucking on menthol things to stop rawness and a choking cough and eventually saw ENT (after they had done chest ex-rays, and rules out asthma and more over the course of a year) and the specialist said to stop using menthol immediately, explained the counter-irritant stuff, and said to just stick with steam and saline. It worked! I find it very hard not to reach for the Vicks/Albus with a cold, but it's a must.

incyspider · 02/12/2012 15:58

Just to clarify I don't actually have a runny nose or any cold like symptoms just the feeling of it being blocked then it bleeds through the night. During the day it feels like I've banged my nose but its much easier to breath.
I have to admit the freezing weather is helping by keeping my nose cold!
