I've scared myself - sharp pain

I'm about 6 weeks and just woke up and had small coughing fit. As I was coughing I felt a sharp pain/ripping sensation in my lower belly. Have I hurt the baby or was it ligaments? I'm terrified.
Pain subsided but have mild cramping now.

Please help?

In the early stages of pregnancy sneezing used to cause me immense pain in the way you describe. My midwife said it was just my muscles and ligaments which were busy relaxing ready for the growing baby.

You can always call your community midwife for advice if you're worried. Mine was always very reassuring.

Thanks Apples. I'm not registered with a GP/MW yet as I just moved home and I have a million forms to fill out before I can register. Knowing someone else felt this and didn't mc has helped me immensely, thank you so much. Now I just need to stop crying Hmm

The sharp pain frightened me too...

If you have any other symptoms (severe cramping, bleeding etc...) go to a&e who will refer you to the early pregnancy clinic. Try to register with a midwife ASAP.

I am not a fit and active person and a so called friend (no longer speak to her cos she is a cow) took me for a "nice walk" when I was 8 weeks... This walk was miles over rough ground and I was pushing 2st DS, got home and felt like death, my whole belly hurt.
So I totally understand your panic, for me after two days the pain stopped.

ScubaSarah · 02/12/2012 08:16

Thanks Strawberries! She sounds like she was a piece of work!! Glad you're ok. I've calmed myself down now but I know I'm going to be checking for blood every hour for the next couple of days.
Apple - I'm hoping to have my registration appointment on Wed so should get MW appt soon after?
Thanks again ladies, DH still fast asleep and generally unhelpful with FTM panics so you've been wonderful x

I agree that it's your ligaments relaxing and muscles stretching. I'm 7wks pg with DC3 and completely forgot about this until I sneezed in bed the other morning and had a really sharp pain under my bellybutton! Amazing what you forget in 2yrs!

And congratulations! Grin

StrawberriesTasteLikeLipsDo · 02/12/2012 08:21

Hope all is well scuba, I'm sure all will be. Thanks she was an odd ball, I've found I've worried just as much as last time this time, so you aren't alone!

Kelerina · 02/12/2012 08:31

This happened to me early on too, sneezing/coughing, any sudden movement really gave me a sharp pain in my stomach, also had mild cramping, looked it up and apparently it's round ligament pain. Perfectly normal!! If you are realy worried obviously go to midwife/GP but sounds normal to me.

It really freaks you out doesn't it?!

Pregnancy is so bizarre, I have had a couple of nosebleeds recently through the night when I got up to go to the loo, looked that up and again apparently perfectly normal pregnancy symptom!

ScubaSarah · 02/12/2012 08:39

Thanks Littlenut and Keralina!
You've all really helped reassure me. Pregnancy sure is weird: magical and terrifying in equal measure! I still have 34 weeks of this mayhem until the real work starts Wink
Strawberries, I guess from what I've read each pregnancy is different and so FTM or not there's always something new to keep you wondering?!
Thanks again ladies xxx

Don't get me started on nosebleeds... My DS is 2.9 years and I still suffer from them. Also apparently normal. And scuba when you get further along, you have the joy of leg cramps! Wink

glossyflower · 03/12/2012 07:25

I had immense pain in my abdomen when I was about 6 weeks and had an orgasm in my sleep! The pain was so bad I thought it felt like a labour/contracting pain. I asked my doctor (although didn't tell him about the orgasm!) and he said it was normal as long as the pain didn't persist and there was no bleeding. I've been fine since, just general aches and pains but nothing that severe. X

ScubaSarah · 03/12/2012 07:37

glossy that sounds like it would have been slightly disturbing, I've not had the fun side effects Wink!! It's really good to know so many others have had similar pains without problem, so thanks again ladies - I have regained my sanity x

I would vote for ligaments. IIRC you have one on each side that goes round your bump from sort of your lateral abs area to your pelvis (dunno how the ends are connected?!). I once slept for a bit on my side with no bump support and woke in agony; I think it just really stretched it.

I have also sneezed/coughed and felt a fairly strong 'twang' sensation.

Check out with MW though to be safe.
