In my last pregnancy, I chomped on remegel (chewy but chalky ones) to get rid of that nasty heartburn. Now it seems though you can't get it in the UK anymore without pay silly prices on eBay. So what else would you guys recommend. Currently 18 weeks and already suffering with it. Gaviscon doesn't help. Rennie works for about five minutes. Please let me know if there is a secret product out there that works......

ASDA own brand fruit flavoured heartburn sweets.

To be honest any chalky sweet should work (Parma violets, refreshers, love hearts) - much nicer than Gaviscon, which is advertised as having a fireman biff one off down your throat!

ZuleikaD · 28/11/2012 10:40

I swear by the Gaviscon double action stuff. On prescription (from your MW) and swigged straight from the bottle.

Wishfulmakeupping · 28/11/2012 10:44

Rice pudding it really works my midwife said to try it but wasn't expecting it to do anything but automatically calmed heartburn down

QueenofNightmares · 28/11/2012 10:54

Rantidine Smile Midwife recommended it for me I get 12 tablets for £1 from Tesco and have one in the morning and one at night before I started on that I was throwing up with the acid reflux.

OpheliasWeepingWillow · 28/11/2012 10:55

Zantac - sweet bliss.

Also pints of cold milk

MrsHelsBels74 · 28/11/2012 11:03

Gaviscon. Horrid stuff but the only thing that worked for me.

lyndie · 28/11/2012 11:04

Omeprazole - on prescription from GP. Lasts all day!

sundaesundae · 28/11/2012 11:17

Omeprazole, gaviscon just made my vom minty.

MimsyBorogroves · 28/11/2012 11:22

chocolate milk. Ice cold.

Very classy in a highly professional meeting, too.

kimcarl1988 · 28/11/2012 12:21

chewing gum works for me id try that

Imnotaslimjim · 28/11/2012 12:35

If you're desperate, a small glass of water with a teaspoon of bicarb and a tablespoon of lemon juice. Works wonders for me, lasts a good few hours, just tastes absolutely grim...........

Maalox suspension on prescription, i take it 2-3 times per day Smile

TinkyPeet · 29/11/2012 17:19

I just use milk, loads of it, but it works for me :)

RooneyMara · 29/11/2012 19:06

Well I just sit upright, which is hard when you're pretty much asleep, but it works quickest for me.

I haven't bothered with anything else this time - it was worse last time, which is odd.

Used to like those chalky sweets like tums etc. Also try using an extra pillow at night.

RooneyMara · 29/11/2012 19:06

Sorry, for feeble suggestions!

Splatt34 · 29/11/2012 20:19

gaviscon advanced (not just the regular stuff) & ranitidine. get them on prescription so you don't have to pay

PipIsOutNow · 29/11/2012 21:24

Gaviscon double action tablets. I swear by them and I have horrific heartburn and acid reflux. I'm surprised I'm not pooing out chalk I rely on them so much!!!

AlisonDB · 29/11/2012 21:44

A mug of Horlicks before bed, then if needed in the middle of the night Gaviscon aniseed liquid swigged from the bottle,
During the day, eating little and often so tummy is never empty,
Lots of milky/dairy stuff as snacks, yoghurts, etc....

Wheels79 · 29/11/2012 22:13

Can't claim I've had it really bad but have managed to reduce mine by sitting up after meals (rather than slumping/lying on sofa) and having a cup of tea/ banana milkshake/ yoghurt within 30 mins of eating. Also have an extra pillow at night.

rrreow · 29/11/2012 22:18

Milk!

BiteTheTopsOffIcedGems · 29/11/2012 22:20

Frijj milkshakes. Yummy and worked really well for at least a few hours. Even better really cold out the fridge.

newyearsday · 03/12/2012 10:23

Milk here too! I was really suffering a week ago, specially with a bad cold, the heartburn was more painful than the chest infection.

A small glass of cold milk after every meal really helped. Extra pillows too.

ChestnutsRoastingonaWitchesTit · 03/12/2012 10:29

The tesco heartburn stuff is just as good as Gaviscon and is £4 something for a big bottle, as opposed to £9? for Gaviscon. I know as I'm downing the stuff like a dockside floozy at the moment.

rrreow · 03/12/2012 11:47

You know you can get Gaviscon prescribed, so you wouldn't have to pay for it with your maternity exemption (at least this was the case when I was pregnant 2 years ago). I think you can ask your midwife to prescribe, otherwise GP.
