Hi all,

I'm 9 weeks pregnant tomorrow....thing is, had my bloods done last week at the doctors surgery.....receptionist rang me today to say to come back in next week to have repeat bloods done again for my thyroid as was a queary over it...she also said dr will discuss medication with you then???? so of course googled it right away! and am now scared witless, as reading lots of 'untreated can affect growth and brian development in fetus'...as well as high rate in miscarraige, which I have already had in August so a bit frightened to say the least.....I had told the nurse last week I am feeling truely awful, not like in my last two pregnancies, really cold and feeling faint a lot of the time so she said she would keep an eye on the thyroid result when it came in.....so any advice or stories of a similar kind...just freeking out a bit.....

Thanks

Frankly

Hi, try not to panic too much, your thyroid would have to be quite a bit out to cause problems and it is the not detecting and not treating that is the problem. However, i do think you need to be seen quite urgently to decide if you need treatment or not and i think a GP is not the right person to treat you. if i were you I would go to your GP and ask to be referred urgently to a consultant in your maternity hospital, I wouldnt wait until next week and i would also explain that you have had one miscarriage. Maybe you can ring your midwife and tell her and ask her to get you on a consultant list or even push you in the right direction. I have an underactive thyroid and I have found that I have needed to be a bit demanding and pushy to be seen early in pregnancy and get the treatment i need, not ideal but its often just how things are. Good luck, maybe you could ask for your actual results (ie numbers) usually TSH and T4, that can give an indication of how big the problem is if you even have a problem in the first place

Hi there. I agree with rhubarb. Every time I have had my TSH measured this pregnancy the GP has said its fine and my medication dose does not need changing. However fortunately I saw a consultant at the maternity unit who told me my TSH should be
