Was I stupid to tell work so soon????

I informed my boss that I am pregnant yesterday. I am 10 wks pg. I thought I should tell him as a couple of the girls knew and my Dad works for the same company and had already told a couple of his mates! I certainly didn't want him hearing on the grapevine. Plus, I seem to be developing a bump very quickly!

Anyway.... I was making a cup of tea this morning and one of the Managers comes in. He said congratulations and asked when the due date was. I told him 6th Aug and he said "My goodness WHY are you telling people so soon, I hope everything is okay???". I was quite taken aback and now I am even more terrified that my scan confirms no heartbeat or something else sinister. Not only would I have to deal with the heartache, but I'd have all these people to tell too!

What have I done???!!

Funny - I wasn't superstitious about telling people about my pregnancy, but I wouldn't bring the cot and pram into the house until ds1 was born. However, that one went out the window with no2, 3 and 4

Northener - harrumph, I did expect threads dedicated to my fertility

M2T - I have been off work for a couple of weeks and yesterday dd had her MMR so I had the day off then as well. Have not been on the Pregnancy threads as they have got very long in my absence and I can't keep up! Will plow through later if my work eases up/I decide to bin the lot.

xx

Mears - that is how I felt when I got pg after my mc. I told our family and close friends at about 6 or 7 weeks as I knew they'd rather be there to support me than like it was the time before.

Besides I had such bad sickness - morning, noon and night - it must have been obvious to everyone from about 4.5 weeks!

SpringChicken · 07/01/2004 12:31

Quick question following mears comments:

What do you bring into the house and what don't you bring in?

As i am now either 13 or 14 weeks Dp and i have decided to buy one things each week a) to spread the cost and b) to actually get moving with things.
I have said to DP that whatever we buy for the nursery (or bottles etc) can come in the house but must not go up, must be kept in a different room or in a box etc. Obviously we aren't buying the cot and buggy yet but when we do i have already arranged for the buggy to be left at my mum and dad's until we are back home post birth and the cot to be left at DP's mum's until a week prior to EDD, at which point we can then put it up.

Am i wierd or does everyone think along these lines?

oliveoil · 07/01/2004 12:34

I brought in all in the house. Not superstitious in the slightest.

M2T · 07/01/2004 12:36

I had the cot up when I was 32 weeks pg. The buggy and carseat came as a set so I needed them here before the birth so I had a car seat to take ds home in.
I am normally quite a superstitious person, but practicalities took over! And will again.

SC - I had DD 4 weeks before her EDD. I wouldn't worry about when to pick the cot up etc. I think I had mine in the house before I actually got pregnant!

Will you be using a moses basket for a while first anyway, before DD / DS goes into a cot?

Mum2Ela · 07/01/2004 12:54

SC - a word of advice. I spent a fortune on baby gadgets, toys etc. still do now. I actually brought the baby gym out when DD was 2 days old! She was 4 weeks early, wouldn't even open her eyes and I stuck her under this gym thing! I found that when DD was born people want to buy you things, or you may get a present from work - I had £100 mothercare vouchers and nothing to spend it on cos I had bought everything DD would have needed til she was 10!

SpringChicken · 07/01/2004 13:51

Oh No, not buying anythign along those lines just yet - i meant stuff to decorate the nursery with like, lampshade's, borders, curtains, pictures, rug, blankets, drapes etc etc.

We aren't having a moses basket as our nephew and niece both had one and only used it 2-3 times.

We are getting a crib for at first which will be in our room and then there will be a cot in the nursery for whenever the baby moves into there.

M2T · 07/01/2004 13:54

We used the moses basket all the time. It was handy to just carry it upstairs at bedtime. And I also used to lie Ds in it whilst a got a shower.... he would just stare up at me. Aw bless.

SC - Just go for it!!! Incidentally, ds's room was never finished and now he needs it redecorated to be a bit 'older'!

I am soooo tempted M2T

We have just had a new beige carpet laid in the spare room/nursery - DP is in the middle of painting the room - just cream at the moment.

I knwo what i'm like, as soon as i buy something i will want to put it up to see what it looks like - Nightmare!!!! It is fun though!

emmatmg · 07/01/2004 14:38

Can't believe your're both so far on M2T and SpringChicken, it only sems like yesterday we were all congratulating you both.

As for telling everyone. Well I'm the worst person when it comes to surprises so had to tell everyone as soon as I could. DS1 I was about 5 weeks, same again with DS2 however I really wanted to surprise everyone by saying I'm 12 weeks when I announced it with DS3........I lasted until about 7 weeks
We had some problems in the early stages of the PG with DS2 and it was soooooo much easier with people already knowing I was PG, instead of mentioning I was PG and then adding any bad news.

I am abit superstitious but had no choice t bring the stuff home when we bought it, my mum lives 70 miles away and I don't especially like MIL so wouldn't have wanted it at her house.
it was a case of having to have it in our house or sending DH out when I was in labour to buy it all. Errrrrr No not a good idea.

Enjoy it M2T, once the news as got out everyone will be fussing around you and it'll be great.

M2T · 07/01/2004 14:40

Aw thanks Emma.

I didn't, still try not to buy, anything for the kids/baby more than 3 months in advance. Because that way you end up buying less unnecessary stuff.

SpringChicken · 07/01/2004 15:01

I can't believe how far along everyone is either - cannot believe Quacks is nearly 12 weeks

Everything just seems to be flying past

Trifle · 07/01/2004 19:17

Just to clarify my situation, the government allows companies to get rid of staff who haven't yet worked a full year. Companies are not obliged to give any warning or reason. After one year the company has to have just reason for getting rid of someone otherwise they risk being sued for unfair dismissal. I was given the push after working for 11 months and 3 weeks, the company were very shrewd in their timing knowing I didnt have a leg to stand on and, as redundancy doesnt kick in until you have worked for a company for 2 years I got zilch.

bobthebaby · 07/01/2004 21:15

I told my work at 10 weeks, because a lot of my work contacts had also become friends and I didn't want to hide my excitment from them. I did however ask them not to blab it all around the company, and they were pretty good and let me tell people in my own time. It's better that way than everyone just wondering why you are putting on weight.

Bod · 07/01/2004 21:36

M2T,

I am only 5 weeks and have told my family and closest friend, but waiting till 8 weeks to tell a few more people, and after first scan to tell everyone else.

I did the 12 weeks with my DS, but couldn't be arsed this time, especially as I see my mom everyweek, she'd know.

Men are just insensitive and in my first Pgny I work on if anything happens then it wasn't the right time.

Good luck

Linnet · 07/01/2004 21:48

I'm 22 weeks today with my second baby and I told my boss and everyone else at work today for the first time.

I had a number of reasons for doing this, mainly we had tests done and wanted to know all the results before announcing it, didn't even tell family until 2 weeks ago!

I don't think that you should worry, telling people is, in my opinion, a personal choice. I've been lucky and I'm only just starting to show now. So I've been able to hide it.

Incidently another woman at my work is pregnant and she told everyone a good few weeks before her first scan. And she is showing already so wouldn't have got away with it as long as I did.

I certainly wouldn't have wanted my boss to hear from other people before I told him so I think you've done the right thing. I'm sure your scan will be fine and you're worrying for nothing.

And Congratulations by the way

Slinky · 07/01/2004 22:08

Awww, congratulations M2T

When I was pregnant with DD1, I had intended to keep it a secret for a while, but they guessed something was up when I kept running out to the toilet to throw up and my boss thought I looked "a bit green round the gills " - so they knew quite early on - 7/8 weeks I suppose.

M2T · 08/01/2004 08:50

Trifle - That must've been your terms and conditions - That is quite scary! In the company I work for the probationary period is 3months..... and after that they must give you a months notice and an adequate reason for letting you go..... oh and pay for any holiday entitlement that you haven't used. I would get redundancy pay as such though.
I have been here for 6 months and women are entitled to the min SMP from the company as long you started work before you fell pregnant.... basically.
The terms you are describing sounds very much like the terms I worked under as a Contractor. It was awful! They would do exactly what you said..... wait until a week or 2 before the conditions change before paying them off. Truly disgusting IMO! Poor you.
