Lifting toddlers

Been having pains up the sides of my tummy, (I am 15 weeks today) I had put it down to stretching pains, mentioned it to the midwife in passing, and she told me to stop lifting my 19 month old so much. I didn't lift him at all over the weekend as I was at my mums and the pains went away, but now I Am home, pretty much by my self as my hubby works away from home a lot. Any advice on how to stop lifting him?

Thanks

How much do you lift him & what are the reasons? Cuddles mainly or practical things? My daughter was 20 months when I was at same stage as you, I have spd & picking her up made it much worse. If we wanted cuddles I sat down with her on my knee, needed comforting on the go I'd get down on her level rather than picking her up. Some things are unavoidable like lifting onto her chair at meal times & in and out of the car, but she could get in her pushchair on her own, then I'd just fasten her in. You won't be able to stop lifting him up altogether but you should be able to reduce it a lot with him suffering.

I'm 10 weeks and lifting my 13 months old gives me pains as well. I spend a lot more time on the floor with him, thank god he's walking, so it's "just" lifting him into highchair, pushchair, carrying him down stairs. I let him do more things on his own, he happily climbs stairs for example (with me right behind him to catch him in case he takes a tumble, of course) or today I dumped all my grocery shopping right by the front door and let him pick up a few items at a time and let him carry it to the kitchen. Fun for both of us for about 30 mins and much less carrying for me!

Thanks guys, I think I had been lifting him without thinking about it, whenever he asked, I have made some simple changes, now refusing to carry him up the stairs, and have been changing his nappy on the floor rather than on the changing station, thinking about switching him into a toddler bed, sooner rather than later, I mean we need the cot for the new baby anyway. Seems to be working anyway as having much less pain now, and its nice to know I am not the only one feeling the pain!
