heartburn! Help!

32 weeks pregnant and heartburn/indigestion is really getting me down.
It was so bad in the last two pregnancies I was prescribed ranitidine(zantac) which worked pretty well but this time around is having no effect at all.
I have tried eating little and often, avoiding all the usual culprits ( chocolate, alcohol, spices, pastry, carbohydrates, brocoli, cauliflower...)
Have tried drinking milk, not drinking milk, ditto ginger ale, all the usual chemist shop stuff ( Gaviscon, rennies, tums, Jaaps health salts...)
My bed is propped up on bricks, I attempt to sleep practically upright....
Is there ANY other remedy, however wacky that I might try? I am so miserable because of it,am retching small amounts of acidy stuff regularly every few seconds and am getting two hours sleep a night (in the spare room !) if I am lucky.
It got really bad two weeks ago and seems to get worse each day now. Added to the achey hips problem I really feel I am falling to bits! Please can you help?

Oh, Jolene, you poor thing, I really sympthise, though I've never suffered that badly. The only thing I can suggest is asking the Dr for another medication. There is a prescription drug called Losec, which is very good at reducing acid. I don't know if it can be used in pg, that's the only thing. Your chemist should be able to tell you if it's safe to take before you approach your Dr or MW. HTH.

Excellent , thanks Suedonnim! Look at the time. I have been unable to sleep!
Will make an appointment with the doc on Monday.
Also went out to the all night Tesco and bought some chewable rennies and a fresh pineapple(read this somewhere) as a last resort!
What you doing up so late??

I used to eat my way through packs of Remegel jolene, it was the only thing that helped me.

Poor you, it sounds awful, I hope you have a better night tonight.

SueDonim · 06/01/2002 13:56

Why was I up so late? Dunno, really, except I'm a night owl! DS2 had been to the cinema and didn't come in until 1am, then we drank wine, ate chocs and chatted, then blah de blah and it was hardly worth going to bed, LOL! School starts tomorrow so will have to go to bed earlier tonight. Hope you get some relief soon.

Poor you jolene, what with achey hips and all! I was going to suggest milk, but you've already tried that.
The other thing is, wait a good hour before lying down after eating, and have you tried peppermint tea? As well as morning sickness, it is apparently good for heartburn.

I suffered too, I had the normal things like rennies but found cold apple juice helped and Dr Pepper gets rid of indigestion as its a good burping drink.

MalmoMum · 07/01/2002 12:51

All I think of to suggest that hasn't already been mentioned is fennel tea.

Have you been back to the doctor? It's just that if Zantac can't get it, it must be sooo bad. Could it be anything like a hiatus hernia? the flap to your stomach is prob pretty distorted with the relaxin and the baby.

Have you tried Rice Dream milk? You could try a milkshake with that and a banana, at least it would offer you some nutrition.

Belching for you

A pregnant friend is suffering from heartburn and whilst I also suffered quite badly I can't remember what helped most. I did sit up in bed before falling asleep amd I drank milk... I hadn't tried fennel tea. I also seem to remember that some fodd and drinks bring it on...
Anyone else has any suggestion ?

I had the worst case of heartburn - it lasted until the day I gave birth!!! The only thing which worked for me was Gaviscon - in liquid form - for some reason the tablets didn't work as well aside from being revolting.

My yoga teacher also recommended ginger tea (the pre-made tea bags are not so effective) - buy some fresh ginger, boil with water (put stick of cinnamon, cloves, orange peel etc to make it more palatable), drink with some honey if you can't take the ginger taste. This is not that same as ginger ale which won't work bec its fizzy & has hardly any real ginger extraact. Good luck - I remember how absolutely miserable I was.

charliesmummy · 14/02/2002 21:01

Agree with the Gaviscon Pena, however, my midwife made sure is was Gaviscon Advance as it is lower in Salt.

Heartburn is so awful, I had it from almost Conception unitl labour, and I used to have a bottle in the car, at work and 2 in the house!

Havetothink · 07/08/2018 04:32

Have you tried eating mash potato? Sounds a bit odd but I think it's so stodgy it stops everything coming up as easily. Not a permanent fix though.

myotherbagisgucci · 07/08/2018 10:17

Oh OP, I feel your pain. I'm taking omeprazole which was prescribed by the doctor and it's been amazing! Since taking it I've had no flare up's, I'd highly recommend asking for some! Smile
