It has just dawned on me...do you need to wash new baby clothes before they can be worn?

I didn't, they get pooed on after about 5 mins anyway so wash them then

chocolateteabag · 10/11/2012 17:12

I did before DS was born when I had the time but have never bothered since.
When he was 3 weeks old we had a nappy incident while out shopping and I had to buy him a new outfit from Tesco and change him in the loos. Got home later and DH wanted to know why I hadn't bothered to take the plastic tags off his babygro Blush

i did for all of mine as they often have starches and other chemicals on them which i didnt want to irritate babies skin, they have very sensitive skin when tiny and i didnt want to risk upsetting it, plus i loved having all the little clothes hung up on the dryer, they looked sooo cute!

PurplePidjin · 10/11/2012 17:22

I've chucked everything through a 30 minute 30* wash, but that's because so much of it was second hand! Plus i like things to smell of fresh air iyswim.

stargirl1701 · 10/11/2012 17:26

I bought all of babystar's second hand at NCT Sales and Jack & Jill Markets so I did.

Chunkychicken · 10/11/2012 17:33

I always wash clothes (mine or baby's) if its new, so put everything through a quick/low temp wash as its not really soiled then. However, I do make sure its well rinsed for baby, so as little detergent is left in the fabric as possible as that's what can irritate sensitive skin.

Isandri · 10/11/2012 17:36

I did a normal 40 degree wash on them. I have a mix of new and second hand. I have sensitive skin and can't use biological washing powder or perfumed washing powder makes my skin itch. Thinking about it I haven't washed the fabric sling I bought.

tamster83 · 10/11/2012 19:28

I've never washed them b4 . all mine Have really sensitive skin and I've never had a problem.... I get more reactions from changing detergents now.

AliceWChild · 10/11/2012 19:31

I think I did, because I felt I ought, but struck me as a PFB thing.

I had a bit of a meltdown when I washed his sheets, and the washing line dared to get a small line of dirt on them! Rewashed the lot. That must be PFB. Grin

Yes, definitely wash new clothes, on a 40C wash at least (30C won't be killing any bacteria on them and I'd imagine a 40C wash is better at breaking down any finishing products put on the clothes), with an extra rinse to be sure more detergent is washed out.

Hyperballad · 11/11/2012 06:53

I did, but only because I love the fresh clean baby smell, which comes from fresh clean clothes not a fresh clean baby!!

mamij · 11/11/2012 06:57

I did for both new a d second hand items! Love the smell of "new" baby clothes.

soapnuts · 11/11/2012 07:14

definitely - I wash anything I buy for me so I'd totally wash baby clothes and anything that is going to come into contact with their skin or that they might chew (wraps, toys etc). If you think about it, where have the clothes been before you've bought them? They've been on the shop floor (dust, people touching/trying on with dirty hands), in boxes in storage and transport (dust, mould) and in the factory (chemicals, dyes etc). Also the manufacturers' priority is not cleanliness - it's that the product looks good when it gets to the shop so they will put finishes on them that make them look fresh but that doesn't mean they are actually clean. I find these finishes really irritate my skin - I'll admit I do have sensitive skin but even my very hardy-skinned DH now doesn't like to wear new clothes once he's thought about where the clothes have been!

OK now I sound a bit crazy about this - I've lived in Asia for years and it's particularly bad there (but then again where are the factories??) - if I'm out and have to buy a new outfit (it has happened!) usually I'll just do it and change as soon as I can and sometimes it's fine but other times I get really sore skin - especially new underwear - yuck! That reminds me - must get on with washing for new baby!! It currently has nothing to wear at all if I stick to my standards!! (which I will!!)

ItsMyLastOne · 11/11/2012 11:31

I did with everything I had for DD before she was born. I didn't bother with stuff I was given when she was born.

This time I've washed stuff, but only because it's been in the loft for 2 years!

stinkinseamonkey · 11/11/2012 12:11

yes, warehouses are filthy and the dust can aggrivate asthma or excema, plus the starchy chemicals. Plus returns are just ironed, not washed!

I still do wash anything new that DS gets 3 years on, new clothes go straight in wash bin

welovedaddy · 12/11/2012 07:37

Have washed all the neutral clothes ready for looming arrival of dc2 - some had been stored in the loft (boxed up, but still...), others were passed on from a friend, others brand new. I once put a new t-shirt straight from packet on dd in a hurry and she had an allergic reaction on her arms....I wash everything now!
