'Absent' nasal bone at 11 weeks ....

My friend is pg with first long awaited baby. She went for a nuchal scan at 11 weeks 2 days and was told all fine risk only 1 in 4000 but that nasal bone not seen. On the report it says in bold type nasal bone absent

She is 36 and now all over the place with worry. They have said she should go back at 16 weeks to confirm all is well. Should she be concerned ? Anyone any experience of this? Many thanks.

if you scroll down \link{http://www.mums.me.uk/nuchal.htm\here} there is some info here

Basically the nasal bone being absent has been linked to down syndrome in some cases.... it does increase the risk of down syndrome BUT I have a dd with down syndrome and in her case a nasal bone was seen - so on its own it may not be a reliable indicator. WIth us there were other 'hard' markers that indicated that she had down syndrome.

I have experience of raising a wonderful daughter who happens to have down syndrome BUT not a lot in terms of absent nasal bones.

sorry should have written this all in one. The absence of the nasal bone needs to be taken into consideration along with nuchal translucency and bloods to get a true indication - taking it into account alone is not good enough as up to 50% of children with down syndrome will have a present nasal bone like my dd1.

thankyou - that is so helpful!

My brother in law has no nasal bone and has no problems what so ever. He doesn't have Downs etc...

Hi - I have had 2 CVS's and nasal bone was seen in both cases - the biggest pointer is nuchal tranlucensy (sp?) - thats what I was told at King's anyway - absence of nasal bone is a factor when taken into account with NT.
