I bought the Angelsounds one which I think was the cheapest and it does the trick nicely! Have never had a problem finding heartbeat.

Mylittlepuds · 07/11/2012 20:30

Whatever you do don't buy the Summer one. It's terrible. Read the reviews on Amazon - it's caused a lot of stress and worry for a lot of people. But then again the instructions say you're unlikely to hear a heartbeat until 21-28 weeks as it's more of an amplifier.

I have been hankering after one (I'm a worrier). I'd discounted people who'd said not to for fear of it causing more stress should you not find a HB on one particular occasion. However after visiting the MW today - and it taking her AGES to find a HB - I've decided not to get one. As much as I'd like to think i'd think 'oh well, can't hear it today' I think I would actually freak out.

In fact a friend lent me the Summer one and even though I'm only 16 weeks I was still quite worried about not hearing a jot after spending a good hour trying to find something.

Hope that helps!

I've got the sonoline b it's amazing!!! Have been listening to the heartbeat since 9 weeks it's a professional doppler and comes with gel. Xxx

BuntyCollocks · 07/11/2012 22:44

I have the hi bebe digital one. Same one as they use at my hospital, it's fab.

lurcherlover · 07/11/2012 22:56

I wouldn't get one unless you are medically qualified. It is far too easy, even with the medical grade ones, to make one of two mistakes: 1. not find the hb of a perfectly healthy baby and panic (this is very common) and 2. pick up a hb, assume everything is fine, when actually you have found your own hb (many dopplers are perfectly capable of "doubling" your own hb so it sounds as fast as the baby's). Too many women have been either panicked that their baby is in trouble or falsely reassured that it is fine. I would really and truly steer clear. Plus, by the time most dopplers are anywhere near reliable you will probably be feeling kicks anyway, which is a much more reliable indicator that baby is fine.

berri · 08/11/2012 00:41

I've been using the Angelsound one since I was 11 weeks, works great for me. I find it v easy to hear the difference between my hb and the baby's.

lurcherlover · 08/11/2012 07:33

The point is berri that dopplers can easily make your hb sound like the baby's by "doubling" it, so you can't necessarily know for sure.

LauraPalmerPlusOne · 08/11/2012 09:38

I'm a worrier, too, and I bought the Sonoline B. Used it from 16 weeks on (after initial HB check by MW).

I'm 27 weeks now and have relied on kicks for a while, but I found the Doppler very reassuring in those earlier days of my 2nd trimester.

I don't believe the hype about misinterpreting the sounds. If you use a reputable brand of Doppler, then it's ridiculously obvious which sound is your own heartbeat, which sound is the baby's HB and which sound is the placenta.

Enjoy your Doppler, OP, and the lovely sound of your little one's HB!

LauraPalmerPlusOne · 08/11/2012 09:43

(I've discovered it's usually people who've never tried Dopplers that spout on about the horrors of using Dopplers. And they're probably the same people freaking out about runny egg yolks!) Grin

Tamisara · 08/11/2012 11:23

Actually even midwives can mistake the mother's HB for the baby's if the baby has died - and no I wouldn't eat runny egg yolks either! Wink

cookiewuk · 08/11/2012 12:30

I have an Angelsounds doppler and think I heard the babys hb today (2nd time I've used it), I was wondering if anyone could confirm that the fast rhythmic whoosh whoosh sound was in fact the hb? I checked my own first and am convinced it wasn't my own. Im approx 12wks. Thanks

RightUpMyRue · 08/11/2012 12:32

I bought an Angelsounds one on ebay. I'd recommend it.

Mylittlepuds · 08/11/2012 12:36

Hi cookie. When I went to see the MW yesterday it sounded a bit like a dog barking!

Mylittlepuds · 08/11/2012 12:40

Actually no...it sounded like my DS doing his impression of a dog barking. I haven't helped at all have I?!

StrawberriesTasteLikeLipsDo · 08/11/2012 12:42

You can rent the ones the MWs use online, depend on your size and budget

cookiewuk · 08/11/2012 13:42

Thank you mylittlepuds you actually were helpful as I can relate the noise to a dog barking! :)

LauraPalmerPlusOne · 08/11/2012 17:18

The 'whoosh whoosh' sound is the placenta. There are some videos on YouTube that give great sound references if you're curious or confused about what you're hearing.

And, BTW, all British Lion eggs (the ones with the red stamp) are vaccinated so enjoy your runny eggs! Wink

LauraPalmerPlusOne · 08/11/2012 17:19

Excuse me, the hens are vaccinated (not each individual egg!)

babymama888 · 22/10/2014 18:25

I used mine for a couple years its a pretty good one... I bought it from www.babydoppler.ca its pretty easy to use. I kept finding my heartbeat for the first little while but then its soo awesome. Def. gives you a peace of mind.

LuckyAugust · 22/10/2014 18:38

Another vote for Sonoline B from me too! I could pick up a heartbeat from 9+5 in another pregnancy. It does take a bit of practice but theres a fab guide on youtube (a girl called 'twoplusone' I think?). I have an anterior placenta so in this pregnancy I've only started to feel movement from 21 weeks. Using the doppler was really reassuring and actually didn't become obsessive (which I guess it probably could!) Smile

Interesting that you revive an old thread with this nugget of wisdom.

ZOMBIE THREAD

And if anyone is reading this and considering getting one, please don’t, please leave it to your midwife to get proper readings. They can be really dangerous and falsely reassure you when it’s sadly not; or incorrectly worry you when there is nothing to worry about.

So odd to read advice from 10 years ago when people thought they were a good idea
