Hi,

I don't want to scare anyone, but I
just wondered if there was anyone out there with this rare condition. I'd love to hear from you.

Hi there,

I was diagnosed with osteoporosis in pregnancy in 1989, when I was 26 years old. I fractured my left hip during the delivery of my daughter who is now 23. It was a traumatic experience, both leading up to diagnosis and afterwards, but it was such a relief when I discovered I wasn't alone.

One of the things that I found most useful, apart from practical help and advice from Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists, was talking with other women about the condition, and the challenges we faced. The National Osteoporosis Society was an invaluable source of guidance and information, and through them I was able to find other women who had had the condition to talk to. They have a forum on this topic: Osteoprosis associated with pregnancy, and a helpline: 0845 450 0230 run by nurses with specialist knowledge of osteoporosis and bone health.

Hi Bedsocks,

I can't believed you broke your hip in labour. That's horrendous. My hip is fine but I had 4 fractures in my back a few weeks after giving birth. Ouch! It hurt a lot but it's not as bad as your story.

Thanks for the info about the forum, I'll check it out. It will be useful to just talk to other women about what drugs they are taking and find out how their coping etc.

How are your hips now? Are you taking any kind of Osteoporosis drug yourself? I assume you are taking calcium tablets. How about your daughter is she likely to develop Osteoporosis as well? Is there Osteoporosis in the family? Apologises for all the questions.

Hi,

I am just recovering from a hip replacement 23 years on from my original fracture due to severe arthritis that had affected this joint. Although my other hip was affected more severely at the time, luckily it didn't fracture during delivery. The orthopaedic consultant pinned both hips at the time. Pleased to say my recovery is going well.

I am not taking any medication for osteoporosis and only ever took Calcium and Viatamin D supplements 23 years ago when my fracture was failing to unite. I have always ensured a high level of dietary calcium.

There are many unanswered questions about this poorly understood condition.

Hi Bedsocks,

Hope you're feeling ok after your op. Thanks for all your info. it's good to talk to someone with the same condition.

Have you seen an article in the mail earlier this year, about a woman describing her experiences of pregnancy related Osteoporosis? Here's the website
www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2097412/Brittle-bones-just-29--I-baby.html

Let me know how you're getting on. This feels like a personal conversation between the two of us. There must be someone else out there with the same condition.

I'm doing really well after the op. Smile
Thanks for the link!

I know there are other people out there like us...

I heard yesterday evening, and am delighted to spread the news that the National Osteoporosis Society, in partnership with the Royal Society of Medicine, will be running an osteoporosis associated with pregnancy workshop at the Medicine and Me event to be held in Aston University, Birmingham.

www.nos.org.uk/page.aspx?pid=1253

This will include a 'special interest session' for health professionals interested in, and women affected by osteoporosis associated with pregnancy. This is a great opportunity for women like us to meet interested health professionals, so that we can learn from each other. For those of us who have experienced the condition, it will be a great chance to be updated on the condition and how it is managed by experts in the field today. For all of us, this will also be an opportunity to tell our story, and to improve understanding of our personal experiences by healthcare professionals, so as to facilitate a wider understanding of how this condition affects us and hopefully to aid prompt diagnosis in the future.

Details are still being finalised, and it looks as though there will be a small charge, though this will include access to the whole day?s events, as well as lunch.

Do put Monday 11th March, 2013 in your diary, I really hope to see you there! If you know anyone else with the condition, perhaps you could spread the word? It would be great if as many women as possible who have had osteoporosis associated with pregnancy could attend!
