nuchal result - worried

i should be over the moon i know, had my nuchal scan today- am 13 weeks - everything looked great for the baby, but my DS risk was 1:684. I am 36, so i know my risk is higher but that seems so much higher than 1:1800 which is what DS is. the nuchal fold measured 2mm. Can anyone give me some feedback on whether I should seriously consider an amnio? thanks everyone.

twinkie, they're sonographers. mine (at the whittington, north london) told me about the nuchal measurement but for 'guidance' I was taken to another room to a special genetic counsellor who had all the leaflets ready if you wanted to opt for diagnostic tests. i could phone her any time for a chat and in the end had amnios with both my girls, as termination would have been an option for us if there had been a problem (question mark over possible edwards syndrome with my 2nd pregnancy), but it's such a personal thing for each individual involved i wouldn't try and influence anyone one way or another.

Madgirl - I'd LOVE to chat to you and we can do this any way you want.
I live in Pinner and am on the Met line so if you actually felt like you like to meet Lottie, and see for yourself what it can be like that would be wonderful, only if you want that though. I guarantee you once you meet her any worries you have about DS will fly out of the window. If you're not up for that then you can call me at home, I don't work Fridays. Anyway either way, ask Mumsnet to give you my email and we'll sort something out when you feel you want to - okay? I think you're being very sensible and brave and have the upmost respect for you btw.
TC xxx

I just wanted to refresh this incase Madgirl misses my reply - I don't want you to think I didn't respond, xx

CountessDracula · 07/01/2004 10:24

TC you are brilliant! Wish I could meet Lottie she sounds so fantastic and I bet Louisa would adore her too...

FWIW I had lots of fears before my nuchal scan as was on rather toxic drugs that could cause probs though quite rare. Before I got pg I always said I would have amino etc. Of course as soon as I got pg quite frankly I didn't care if my baby had 4 heads, it was my baby and it was coming out regardless! So I didn't have it on the basis that I would not have terminated.

Madgirl your result sounds pretty good to me xx

ThomCat · 07/01/2004 10:31

Well thank you CD and for the record I think you'r pretty fab actually. If the opportunity ever arises for us to meet you then try stopping me xx

FairyMum · 07/01/2004 10:35

My friend had 1:25,she didn't have any further tests and her baby was absolutely fine

Blackduck · 07/01/2004 10:53

Have you had (thought about having) the triple bloods done? I had an amnio as I am older, but on the day my consultant told me that the triple bloods are actually much more effective in women over 35 than those under - they can give you a quite accurate ratio, without having to go through the amnio. I went for the amnio purely because I'd worked myself up for it, but if I'd known I'd have had the triple bloods first and then had the amnio if my ratio had been 'bad'. Obviously the bloods aren't definate like an amnio. Another issue to conisder - the amnio doesn't always take (they have to grow some cells) so sometimes it has to be done again!
Like others have said, I think the bottom line is what would you do depending on the result?

madgirl · 07/01/2004 15:32

Thomcat, I did read your post, and again was waiting for a moment to write a decent reply as opposed to my usual one-liners! I work at the other end of the met line (aldgate) and wondereed if i could come and see you one day after work- know that this prob won't be terribly convenient for you, but anyway i will email you via tech and hopefully we can arrange sth. I would love to meet you and lottie
I have decided definitely not to go for the amnio. and i feel so much happier and excited about the baby since i made the decision, but as i was just telling my mum, i couldn't have come to this decision so quickly without ALL of you guys. i hope i can give as much back to mumsnetters as I have received.

I've been following this madgirl and you sound really positive and together about it all. Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy!

Hi Madgirl - that would be fine. How handy that we can do the Met line thing Lottie and I can always jump on the tube and meet you in your lunch hour one Friday so you don't have to get in from work late and stuff - that would be fine.
Anyway, for now, I'm just so pleased you are feeling more positive

dinosaur · 19/01/2004 17:32

I just wanted to post a big thank you to all of you who responded on this thread to madgirl. It's also been a tremendous help to me in deciding what to do about my nuchal result etc. (Based on age alone - 1 in 97, adjusted for nuchal fold thickness etc. 1 in 434). I'm not planning to ask for any further tests.

ThomCat · 19/01/2004 17:57

That makes me SO happy dinosaur. I want to cry - well done you
Ohhh - big, mnassive, hug coming your way - {{{{}}}}}} and a big old kiss too - X

dinosaur · 20/01/2004 10:30
