Silly question, but what do new born babies actually wear?

Hi - at my 20 week scan on Monday I found out I'm having a boy. This has sparked a mega shopping misson today. However, as I trailed around the shops, I realised I have no idea what a new born baby should actually wear!

Please could you ladies with experience let me know what types of things I should be buying?

Thanks

This is all so useful. Thankyou very much. Halloweeny your post made me giggle. It's exactly that type of advice I need. The Mumsnet community is ace. Smile

Ha ha yes, always make sure the compass is pointing due south with boys to avoid leaks. Also, if Huggies leak, try pampers and vice versa. They seem to fit differently and what is snug in all the right places on one baby is leaky on another

Not sure if anyone else has suggested it, as I haven't read the whole thread Blush sorry, but it's well worth looking out for NCT Nearly New Sales. The things they have for little babies are often pristene, as they only wear them a couple of times before they grow out of them.

Save yourself some £££££! Smile

Now I've read the thread and phew wasn't repeating someone else.

Would second everyone who says babygrows/sleepsuits with feet. Until baby is mobile, they are the best bet every time! Smile

Ah yes, and putting socks on under the sleepsuit is best at first, they may still get them off, but not as often and at least you can find the damn things afterwards. I have found teeny baby socks years later in the strangest places!

Glad to be helpful Grin

I support the 2nd-hand market suggestion! Haven't tried NCT Nearly-New but these (Baby and children's markets) are excellent value for money. As are handmedowns!

Yep, like they all say - sleepsuits. Ones with poppers (nearly typed poopers, you don't want that!) down the front. Vests. Hat. Pramsuit thing for outside.

Someone upthread said 6-10 sleepsuits - personally I wouldn't buy that many til you know what size you need. My dd was a very normal 7lbs 2oz but we found the "newborn" things drowned her so boots.commed it for "low birth weight" stuff. Although it sounds a bit unbelievable, I found I was actually able to focus on ordering some stuff online and it came really quickly. (That sounds facetious, it's not meant to - I genuinely thought my brain would be so soupy that I wouldn't be able to cope with a website!)

Also - Oxfam or similar for everything! All my stuff is from there and lots of it was clearly new, or had only been worn once. Eeek how exciting for you!

I'm having my first in March too which is a weird month as sometimes it snows yet this year we had a heatwave, I did go a bit mad at first and bought lots of 0-3 month vests, sleep suits, outfits etc assuming the '0' meant newborn but have since read that these will swamp her so have bought a few packs of Newborn, NEXT do an 'up to 1 month' range which I have heard are good.

eBay is my friend and I've had some great bargains off there.

I've also bought a few sets of leggings/tops with the theory that if her nappy leaks I'll only have to change her bottom half but this may be a newbie theory Grin

Even for a boy I would say put him in tights if it's chilly, as socks just go AWOL. Gap and H&M do "boy" type tights, or you can get plain white, red, navy etc in supermarkets.

pookamoo · 23/10/2012 18:36

Tights can go under babygrows or soft trousers.

Biggest thing I found was sizes! We stocked up on 0-3month stuff for DD but at 8weeks old she is only just now fitting into them (was 8lb1oz at birth) and still gets all tangled up in some 0-3m sleep suits which makes her panic and get all moany. Newborn size, plain white sleep suits from TU at sainsburys with built in scratch mits have been FANTASTIC for night and day (and still fit now) and mothercare for bodysuits you can't really go wrong.
