would you take antibiotics in pregnancy?

On top of everything else I have terrible sinus pain now. Doctor took all of 30 seconds to prescribe amoxicillin antibiotics. They are apparently safe to take in pregnancy, but I'm still not sure whether to take them or not. Shall I leave it a day or two or what?

absolutely! i took amoxy for sinus infection. that particular infection can cause an absess in your sinus cavity. do you really want or need an absess so close to your brain?

w/my first pregnancy, i took flucanodazole pessary for bacterial vaginosis.

yes I would, and did both times. Ds before I even knew I was pregnant, and dd about 4 courses for suspected urine infections (which turned out not to be!)

Yes. I think it's worth it if you are in terrible pain - as it will reduce your stress levels a bit, so will be better for the baby.

yes. but eat lots of yoghurt-y type stuff to stave off the tummy bugs.

Take them, I had terrible sinus problems that went on months in early stages of this pregnancy. You dont want it turning into something nasty.

Yes I have, I also had to take steroids as I had a very bad chest infection and ended up in hospital for 5 days. Consultant said basically after 20 weeks most medication under careful supervision is safe.

Hope you feel better soon. I've only had sinusitis once and it was the pits. Felt better within 36 hours of taking antibiotics.

Take them - you will start to feel better and it can only be good for both of you for you to be on top form.

Amoxy is safe when pg - I was prescribed something else when pg which wasn't and found the advice on netdoctor {www.netdoctor.co.uk} for advice on what you can take and what you can't

Emkana, I had two courses when pg with ds for UTIs and was really worried about taking them but he's fine.

Took them at week 37 for a UTI. All okay.

Emkana I avoided medication when pregnant - especially antibiotics as autism and antiobioitcs (or other way round) don't really go together (gut problems). Anyway straight after ds3 was born I was put on several IV antibiotics, and bfeeding he will of course have received some (there was talk about him having them as well, although the hospital changed its mind). Sooo the point of this is that sometimes you need to take them, and that's that.

In your situation I might wait 24 hours (I had this last week and it went as quickly as it started), but I wouldn't wait 48 hours iyswim. I think with all the recent stress you've been through its quite likely that you are more run down than usual. As expat says you don't want to end up with an abscess. The antib's aren't going to damage your baby developmentally now- as you've passed that stage. As SP says take some probiotics at the same time if you have them so you don't upset your stomach etc.

I think that came out wrong- if its a safe drug for pregnancy its not going to developmentally affect a baby anyway- I just meant that there's no chance of even something unexpected happening there as you're not in the first trimester! Hope that makes sense - half past 3 I'm not with it (or is it half past 2).

emkana I have had 11 (count'em) courses of antibioics this pregnancy plus 2 courses of steroids for pneumonia along with evil iron infusion drugs and they are perfectly happy to use all these drugs in pregnancy.

Amoxyll has been used for decades in pregnancy with no reported ill effects to the baby. I would certainly suggest you start them asap as delaying it might cause the infection to get worse necessitating stronger doses of antibiotics to get rid of it.

I took anitbiotics at least 5 times when pg with DD2.

I've taken them for sinus problems and a UTI in this pg. Not pleased about it, but better than continuing in pain / ending up with more problems. Make sure you've got the thrush treatments to hand if you're somebody that gets thrush with a/b's though.

You don't want to get worse and pass it on to your baby.

i have just been given them for a cough as the only medicine i could take was this crap glycerin stuff from boots and which was not shifting anything!

Am 37 wks. After 2 sleepless nights with terrible earache I finally went to the Dr. So tired I felt sick and kept bursting into tears. It took Dr seconds to prescribe Amoxycillin.

On my 3rd day now and starting to feel better.
It must be better for baby for me to be happy and on the road to recovery.

Drs are so reluctant to prescribe antibiotics these days that if you get them take them. Its the dr's job to decide if the benefits outweigh the risks, and they must feel that you need them.

I wouldn't wait and give the infection a chance to turn really nasty.

Yes. You need to be healthy. I've had to take steriods as well for my asthma but to carry well to term I HAVE to be healthy and capable of breathing. That's life honey. Get well soon.

That's funny, I had sinusitis when breastfeeding and GP said there was nothing I could safely take.
