Dippy eggs!

Im slightly jealous of my other half having eggs and soldiers! But I was told I'm not allowed to have any eggs unless they're hard boiled? Is this true as I really want egg and soldiers too!

LauraPalmerPlusOne · 30/09/2012 10:23

Not true. Lion eggs (recognisable because of the red stamp on the eggs) come from chickens who are immunised. Enjoy your soldiers and dippy eggs!

OhThisIsJustGrape · 30/09/2012 10:25

I lived on dippy eggs and poached eggs during my last pregnancy, they're fine as long as lion stamped.

AlisonDB · 30/09/2012 10:27

Sadly it is true! Its because of the danger of food poisening.
I also LOVE runny eggs, poached, boiled or fried,
And have been very jealous of hubby & son sitting down to eat these! :-(
Also you are meant to avoid any raw eggs!
So in ice cream, puddings like tiramasu, etc..

I have not eaten eggs since i found i was pregnant (now 28 weeks) as i dont like them unless runny,
Although a friend of mine would "treat" herself to the odd runny egg and was never sick and her daughter was born perfectly,
I suppose she felt the risk was worth it, i personally am not comfortable taking that risk.
Cant wait till December, i'll be eating runny eggs at every meal! ;-D

AlisonDB · 30/09/2012 10:30

Ooh i didnt know about the lion stamped eggs!!!
I lIve in Holland anyway so i dont think this is the case over here. :-(

NimChimpsky · 30/09/2012 10:33

I really missed them. And mentioned it to my midwife who said that while there's still the advice not to, all lion marked eggs are vaccinated and the risks are miniscule. She happily ate runny eggs throughout and after that, so did I. She said this as a friend though, not as my midwife. She did explain she couldn't recommend going against guidelines but I know her outside of midwifery anyway!

Food poisoning in general is not a risk in pregnancy, but certain types of poisoning like listeria or salmonella. Which you wouldn't get with a lion marked egg.

In fact, the midwife said you were far, far more likely to become ill eating bagged salad and they don't recommend you avoid that.

I did my own risk assessment on things and acted accordingly. Runny eggs I ate.

showtunesgirl · 30/09/2012 10:34

I ate dippy eggs whilst pregnant but only with Lion Marked eggs.

Pritchyx · 30/09/2012 10:35

Ah! This is good news! My other half is now trying to say every box of eggs is fine for him and not for me! So I'm going to have to kick up a fuss and prove him wrong! Which means getting out of bed :( but thank you lovely ladies! So many different opinions from non-pregnant and books don't help! I feel like a machine!

Also, salmonella doesn't pose a direct risk to an unborn baby like listeria and toxo do. You are more likely to get salmonella that someone who is not pregnant (because of lowered immunity) and it would be nasty for you if you did, but it can't damage the baby unless you get extremely dehydrated. You won't get it from lion-stamped eggs anway. Enjoy your delicious egg!

Kelerina · 30/09/2012 12:56

Enjoy your runny eggs, I am!!! The risk is so tiny and I have yet to get food poisoning from runny eggs and I doubt it's going to start now.

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 30/09/2012 12:57

I've been eating 2x medium boiled eggs a day for much of this pregnancy. After the school run I can get half an hour of peace while baby is asleep so it's tea, eggs and soldiers for me most days.

Yes to lion eggs.

I'm 35 weeks.

Good luck and enjoy your soldiersSmile

flyoverthegoldenhill · 30/09/2012 13:16

Nim thats brilliant and exactly what I've always believed. Medical professionals have to spout whatever is the current favorite shite, but they never follow any of this crap themselves. Its like alcohol, how many times have they changed the guidelines ? And in the real world I have only ever known one person who actually had food poisoning, everyone else has said it to get 3 days off work !

BadBuddha · 30/09/2012 13:36

I'm pregnant and just had two dippy eggs for lunch. Delicious Smile

HaveALittleFaith · 30/09/2012 14:14

I think it's ok as long as its not unchecked eggs. However, I did refuse to eat the eggs that DH proffered this morning that were 10 days past the sell by date considering he didn't put them in water to see if they were off!

Ohfi · 30/09/2012 14:19

This is the best news I've heard since my BFP! Smile

Jo178 · 30/09/2012 14:22

The risk is minuscule especially with lion stamped eggs. I however didn't take the risk throughout my pregnancy and boiled eggs were one of the first meals I had after DD was born. They were delicious after all that time!

NotGeoffVader · 30/09/2012 14:33

The only risk really would arise if you were eating raw eggs.

I did not stress over this when pregnant, and disregarded about 95% of all the advice over what not to eat. I had a very good pregnancy and have a perfectly healthy DD.

I ate eggs (soft boiled, poached/runny), mayonnaise, soft (spreadable) cheese, drank (occasionally) spritzers - with lots of soda, and ate peanuts.

Enjoy your dippy eggs! :)

halloweeneyqueeney · 30/09/2012 17:10

"I ate eggs (soft boiled, poached/runny), mayonnaise, soft (spreadable) cheese, drank (occasionally) spritzers - with lots of soda, and ate peanuts"

FWIW those things aren't on the banned list though! its soft cheeses with mould rinds not the spreading kind!

its home-made mayonaise not hellmans type, no shop/restraunt type place would have homemade mayonaise in anything without making a HUGE deal about marketing it as its so hard to make and only lasts a couple of house so v wasteful. Its a total faff everything has to be at perfect temperature and timed to an exact second etc. And even so would be okay with lion eggs (but the only places that make it are whole food type places who don't use lion eggs)

you are allowed to drink a small amt, its not harmful in any dose

early peanut exposure reduces allergies later, you are allowed peanuts in pregnancy if you don't have an allergy yourself

kellestar · 30/09/2012 17:15

I actually have to buy eggs when pregnant. Our hen's produce the most beautiful and scrummy dippy eggs. I look with envy at DH when he had them.

Ibelyx · 30/09/2012 17:30

I had runny eggs and ended up with a big healthy baby. I also ate blue cheese and rare steak. I just had everything in moderation. Apart from ciggies, gave them up.

NotGeoffVader · 02/10/2012 09:54

Halloweeney - yes, you're quite right, those things are not on the 'banned' list - but they are things that people seem to be wary of. I didn't try home-made mayo, but that is because I am a lazy mare and couldn't be arsed to make something I could buy in a jar.

I do think that sometimes there is a lot of scaremongering about with regard to health & safety issues.

Kellestar - I envy your chicken-keeping! :)

KMR281 · 02/10/2012 11:24

I've been eating eggs too - if lion marked. This thread has reminded me tho - where has up-to-date info on what we can/can't eat during pregnancy these days? This is my 3rd pregnancy, and I'm sure all guidelines have changed, but I haven't been given antything (that I have found) by midwife re. food. I am veg, so don't eat meat anyway, so other than soft cheeses like brie etc and booze, what's banned?? Or indeed, what's now back in?

showtunesgirl · 02/10/2012 11:40

www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/foods-to-avoid-pregnant.aspx I think the only thing that's changed recently is that stilton is no longer on the banned list.

pinkpeony4 · 02/10/2012 14:08

I just had two dippy eggs for lunch - delicious! (currently 18 weeks) I ate them throughout my last 3 pregnancies too and my dc's are perfect Grin

HaveALittleFaith · 02/10/2012 15:41

Oops I ate pepperoni the other day!

xmasevebundle · 02/10/2012 18:08

I was told you cant eat them 'runny' due to the middle not been cooked lion marked or not!?

I dont eat them as they are chickens embryos which made me feel sick...

I do miss a good runny egg with cripsy chipsSad
